Warhorse Studios, the team behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance<\/a> series and an upcoming Lord of the Rings<\/a> game, has been hit with a \u201cserious\u201d cybersecurity incident.<\/p>\n

For as long as video games have been a thing, there have been hackers trying to break into whatever they can<\/a>, be it the games themselves or the teams that make them. The past few years have seen a massive rise in hacking, with notable teams like Rockstar<\/a>, Insomniac<\/a>, Capcom<\/a>, and many more having their databases broken into.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, another big developer was added to that lineup of hacked teams – Warhorse Studios, the creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel<\/a>. A statement was released that confirmed \u201cunauthorised access to company systems\u201d, with CEO Martin Fr\u00fdvaldsk\u00fd calling it a \u201cserious\u201d incident. It might be even worse than is being said, though.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, Warhorse Studios shared an update on the incident<\/a>, confirming that the hackers gained access to its systems, but that it\u2019s not sure if \u201cpersonal information\u201d has been affected. The team says that it\u2019s continuing to work with authorities, but that it won\u2019t be \u201cconducting interviews or providing additional comments\u201d right now.<\/p>\n

Recent comments by Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel V\u00e1vra have me reflecting on the future of RPGs. <\/p>\n

It seems that the situation is a lot more dire than that statement suggests, though. ResetEra user RedbullCola shared the statement and noted that someone from the studio<\/a> told them that it\u2019s \u201cransomware\u201d that has hit every system and \u201cessentially stopped\u201d game development entirely.<\/p>\n

They aren\u2019t the only one to claim this, either, as Redditor bertik11 called it \u201cextremely serious\u201d since employees \u201ccan\u2019t work at all\u201d<\/a> because all computers have been disconnected as a security precaution. The team reportedly isn\u2019t allowed to turn on their computers, and the hackers are blackmailing the studio and demanding money from them.<\/p>\n

The amount of money being asked for by the hackers currently hasn\u2019t been reported. It\u2019s also worth noting that Warhorse itself hasn\u2019t confirmed the attack as ransomware just yet, so take it with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n

If these reports are true, it likely means that the next Kingdom Come game<\/a> and the mysterious Lord of the Rings project<\/a> are both impacted by the halted development. While it might not sound like a few days without working could push things back, there\u2019s no telling how long this situation could go on and how much damage it ends up doing.<\/p>\n
