With just one intervening day before the switch from Eden Park to Seddon Park, the final T20I of the series (and India’s 40th of the year) turns into a short stopover. The attention has already started drifting towards the one-dayers, especially since India’s decorated batting duo has landed on the same island for the 50-over challenge.

India have pocketed the T20I series, but the manner of their 87-run defeat in Auckland was a reminder that New Zealand haven’t exactly been blanked out, but outmuscled in a series deep-fried in runs.

Shreyas Iyer called the defeat a “great learning curve,” conceding that Eden Park’s unique dimensions posed a fresh challenge for many within the team. The home team fared better on the ground with a short straight boundary, extra bounce, and strong winds that prevented dew, powering to 259 and handing India their second-heaviest run-defeat ever.

India wouldn’t have minded the hiccup: the series has allowed them to test out combinations, move things around slightly, and find new batting heroes. But the bowling, particularly in the second half, has been a cause of worry. Among Full-Member sides, India have the worst average and second-worst economy since the T20 World Cup this year.

New Zealand have been served greatly by an in-form Glenn Phillips, who has been exceptional at shifting gears, and found support in Daryl Mitchell, Bevon Jacobs and Michael Bracewell. Mitchell Santner has been the standout bowler across both teams, while Jacob Duffy came back strongly after leaking runs in two games. They’ve managed to put India’s batting under pressure twice, and it came by restricting them in the Powerplay. That could be the defining factor in the final game as well. As could be their catching: New Zealand have dropped as many as 12 this series.

When: India vs New Zealand, 5th T20I, November 1, 2026, 12:30 PM IST, 8:00 PM Local time

Where: Seddon Park, Hamilton

What to expect: Compared to Auckland, it gets cooler in Hamilton, with temperatures dropping to as low as 4 °C early morning. It’s likely to hover between 12-15 °C during match times. The winds, though, might not be as big a factor. Seddon Park has usually been a high-scoring venue, and the run-fest is likely to continue.

Team news

New Zealand: The hosts have changed around their pace attack as well, some of which have been forced. Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry are injured, and Kyle Jamieson will re-link with them in the ODIs. It’s given a surprise chance to Matthew Fisher, and the quick has taken three wickets in his two appearances so far. Now that they’ve broken the losing streak, they might consider sticking with the same combination.

Predicted XI: Tim Seifert (wk), Finn Allen, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevon Jacobs, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Nathan Smith, Adam Milne, Jacob Duffy, Matthew Fisher

India: Ishan Kishan, who had been ruled out of the second and third T20I, returned in the fourth, also taking up wicketkeeping duties. It remains to be seen whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, swapped in and out for those two games, gets a chance in the dead rubber, especially if Sanju Samson isn’t taking the gloves.

A pace-heavy lineup hasn’t afforded space for Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy yet, despite Axar Patel’s poor returns. All four quicks have been given sufficient game time around Arshdeep Singh’s fixed spot. They could go back to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose much-awaited comeback has produced only one wicket in three games.

Predicted XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson/Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy/Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav/Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Yadav

Did you know?

– India have conceded 200+ 11 times in 39 matches, the most by a team in a calendar year across all T20 cricket

– Glenn Phillips now has more runs (276) than anyone against India in a T20I series

– New Zealand’s catching success this year stands at 74.1 per cent, the second-worst among the top-12 ranked T20I teams in the world, after Pakistan (73.1)

What they said

“You need a ton of runs to even have a sniff of beating India, so for us to be able to put that sort of score on the board today (259), I guess it’ll give us confidence going forward. It’s our first time being up in that 250 range, at least in the time that I can remember. I don’t think you’ve ever got enough to feel comfortable with this side.” – New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips after the 4th T20I.

“Some phenomenal shots, which were like pure bliss. Kudos to him. He’s been consistent throughout the series, so a lot to learn from him,” India captain Shreyas Iyer, on Phillips’s knock in the 4th T20I.

No time to rest.
