And that was clearly shown after soccer analyst Jamie Carragher was threatened with legal action from Aston Villa over comments he made on The Overlap podcast.

The former Liverpool defender is one of the most prominent analysts in the sport on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, he features for Sky Sports’ coverage of the Premier League. For the Champions League, he features on the acclaimed CBS Sports coverage.

In addition to those responsibilities, he also features with Sky partner/foil Gary Neville and fellow legends Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, one of the most successful covering the sport.

On the podcast, he talked about the “food chain” in the sport among discussion about whether or not manager Unai Emery could leave Aston Villa to coach Manchester United, currently in another spell of horrific form under Michael Carrick.

Jamie Carragher 🗣️“shut the fcuk up Villa fans…”

🤣🤣🤣
#AVFC https://t.co/DSmolqyPjC

— LB✌🏽 (@Londonblue_2) October 29, 2026

“I’m not trying to annoy Villa fans, but the reason I’m saying this, there is a chain in football where you like it or not. Real Madrid will take Man U’s best player, they’ll take Ronaldo. There’s very few above United, same as Liverpool. But there will be teams above Aston Villa, Manchester United’s best player, they did it with Ronaldo. But there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they’ll take their manager, or they’ll take their players, so shut the f*ck up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United,” Carragher said.

That drew a fierce backlash from Villa, who posted a message on social media that they were initiating legal action against the pundit for the remarks.

Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans.

Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.

Nassef Sawiris, Chairman https://t.co/xUEcFKsiEx

— Aston Villa (@AstonVilla) October 30, 2026

Before things could escalate further, Carragher took to social media to offer an apology.

I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners & their fans.
My language this week was clumsy & wrong.
I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies.
Good luck today UTV!

— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) October 31, 2026

“I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans. My language this week was clumsy and wrong. I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies. Good luck today UTV!” Carragher wrote.

Were Jamie Carragher’s comments a bit crass? Sure. But for a team to threaten legal action over soccer analysis on a podcast is incomprehensible. Carragher didn’t slander anyone and he didn’t tell a single lie. There is a pecking order in world club soccer and Aston Villa is far behind the power and influence of Manchester United, no matter what the current English Premier League standings or recent form of the two clubs may say. To be fair to Villa, they are a proud club with a proud history, but it’s not comparable to United’s history or future potential.

Would Aston Villa have had a real case against Jamie Carragher? That’s for UK legal experts to decide. But it is startling to think about what would happen if the same standards would apply to American sports media. The number of lawsuits Stephen A. Smith alone would face from all of the individuals he has criticized over the years would be uncountable.

The standards for public speech are very different in the United States and United Kingdom.
