\"\"<\/a>EA, BioWare<\/p>\n

Last week\u2019s announcement that EA was shutting down game developer BioWare and scrapping the newest \u201cMass Effect\u201d game upset much of the fanbase. Now, the apparent reason why has been revealed.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/a> reports that the decision to close BioWare was mainly due to EA pursuing the opportunity to make a new \u201cStar Wars Battlefront\u201d game.<\/p>\n

Citing sources, they say EA executives were looking at the company\u2019s portfolio for the next few years and very conscious of the $18 billion of debt they\u2019ve been saddled with following the company\u2019s acquisition by Saudi Arabia\u2019s investment fund.<\/p>\n

They had two sci-fi action games planned, each of which was set to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to create \u2013 \u201cMass Effect Universe\u201d and \u201cStar Wars Battlefront 3\u201d. They chose the latter, believing that a new \u2018Battlefront\u2019 game was more likely to be a success than a new \u201cMass Effect\u201d.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s certainly not the only reason for the developer\u2019s closure \u2013 poor reviews for recent titles and corporate politics among other things \u2013 it is said to be one of the \u201cmain\u201d ones.<\/p>\n

This follows on from reports last week that studios DICE and Respawn are working together on a \u2018future project\u2019 believed to be \u201cStar Wars: Battlefront 3\u201d.<\/p>\n
