According to reports, Manchester United<\/a> have set a \u2018deadline\u2019 for Michael Carrick\u2019s future, while the \u2018preferred\u2019 target to replace him has emerged.<\/p>\n

Carrick <\/a>is on the thinnest of ice at Man Utd because the Premier League giants have endured a dire start to the 2026\/27 campaign.<\/p>\n

After finishing third in the Premier League last season to qualify for the Champions League, Man Utd<\/a> have reverted to type after a disappointing summer of recruitment and are currently without a win in nine matches in all competitions.<\/p>\n

Overall, the Red Devils have only won two of their 13 matches this season, and they sit 17th in the Premier League table.<\/p>\n

Carrick is the overwhelming favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked<\/a>, and he potentially has two home games against AS Roma and Aston Villa before the international break to save himself.<\/p>\n

Manchester United turn to \u2018preferred candidate\u2019 to replace Michael Carrick<\/p>\n

A new report from The Guardian claims<\/a> Carrick will \u2018stay in charge\u2019 for the Roma game at least, but they have \u2018made contact\u2019 with former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.<\/p>\n

The report explains:<\/p>\n

\u2018Eddie Howe is Wilcox\u2019s preferred candidate should Carrick be sacked, with contact between the parties understood to have been made. The former Newcastle \u00admanager is open to taking up the position, \u00adsubject to negotiations. He would cost around \u00a33m in compensation to Newcastle.<\/p>\n

\u2018Julian Nagelsmann, the \u00adformer Germany and Bayern Munich head coach, is highly regarded by \u00adChristopher \u00adVivell, United\u2019s director of \u00adrecruitment, who is believed to have sounded out his fellow \u00adGerman. The pair previously worked together at RB Leipzig.\u2019<\/p>\n

And journalist Henry Winter has told talkSPORT that Carrick has a \u2018deadline\u2019 to save his job before the upcoming international break.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go into the Roma game. You prepare for that,\u201d Winter told talkSPORT when asked what Carrick must do to respond after the Chelsea match.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe irony of that is that it was probably one of his best ever performances as a Manchester United player [in the 7-1].<\/p>\n

\u201cHe scored twice, and he was fantastic\u2026And then he limps on into the Aston Villa game and probably loses his job in the international break.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know what international breaks are like in the rhythm of managers; if they\u2019re going through a difficult time, it gives the club opportunity and time to get someone in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also you have the risk of if an incumbent manager is staying on during the international break, and there are dark clouds over his head \u2013 those players who go off on international break.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what we\u2019re like [the media]. I would imagine the Portuguese journalists before they got Denmark and Wales and the Argentinian journalists before the Uruguayans and Costa Rica.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will be talking respectively to Bruno Fernandes, and to Lisandro Martinez, and say, \u2018What do you think of this Carrick character?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd of course, the sort of headlines emanating from those international camps, and other ones, are just a bit too much.<\/p>\n
