The guided walk, led by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), focused on tree identification and seed gathering as part of the Clyde Climate Forest Tree Warden Scheme.

Participants explored the cemetery grounds with TCV community volunteer coordinator Laura Salvage and volunteer officer Grace Mawdsley, learning how to recognise different species and collect seeds.

Among those taking part was Weekend Tele columnist David Carnduff.

He said: “Laura, from TCV, had the group searching for beech mast, which are husks containing the trees’ seeds which are a favourite food of the cemetery’s squirrels.

“Several members of the group also found acorns shed from oak trees, and birch seeds which are tiny and difficult to spot.

“The group were shown how to check whether acorns are viable by placing them in a container with water.

“If the acorns sink, that’s an indication that it’s viable and will produce a tree if conditions allow.”

The Tree Warden Scheme encourages volunteers to plant, protect and promote trees in their local communities as part of wider climate action efforts.

The programme operates across 16 neighbourhoods in the Glasgow City Region with low tree canopy cover, including central Greenock.
