Christine McVie was truly essential to the success of Fleetwood Mac<\/a>. She provided the band with her talents both behind a keyboard and a microphone, showing off her vocal prowess on emotive tracks like \u2018Songbird\u2019 and concocting catchy keys for hits like \u2018Don\u2019t Stop\u2019, but she also demonstrated her skill with a pen. <\/p>\n

Alongside Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, McVie emerged as one of the lead songwriters in the group, creating some of their most well-known and well-loved songs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just take a look at McVie\u2019s credits with Fleetwood Mac. She wrote almost half of the songs on the band\u2019s magnum opus, 1977\u2019s Rumours<\/a>, including the bouncy \u2018You Make Loving Fun\u2019 and the slightly more dramatic \u2018Oh Daddy\u2019. She created their glitteriest hit, \u2018Everywhere\u2019, which featured on Tango in the Night<\/a>, as well as \u2018Little Lies\u2019, the single that preceded it. It was as if every song she touched turned to gold. <\/p>\n

But McVie wasn\u2019t always quite so secure or forthcoming in her talents. After joining Fleetwood Mac in 1970, McVie began contributing her songwriting skills to the band, but her early efforts were often outweighed and overshadowed by guitarist Bob Welch. Although he left the band before they even started work on their magnum opus, he was, at one point, a driving creative force in Fleetwood Mac.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McVie had already built a reputation before becoming part of that changing lineup. Performing under her maiden name, Christine Perfect, she played keyboards with Chicken Shack, whose first two albums reached the British charts. Her vocal on their version of \u2018I\u2019d Rather Go Blind\u2019 also demonstrated the emotional directness that would become so important to Fleetwood Mac. <\/p>\n

She could make a song feel intimate without draining it of strength, letting the melody carry feelings that another singer might overplay. That musical identity was firmly established before the platinum records arrived. Finding room for it within a band with several strong personalities was a different challenge altogether.<\/p>\n

Even interviewers noticed Welch\u2019s increasing dominance in the band, so much so that Rolling Stone<\/a> prompted McVie to comment on the matter in 1975. \u201cYou know, you\u2019re the second person today who\u2019s told me he thought Bob Welch was hogging the show,\u201d she responded, before admitting that she hadn\u2019t noticed this trend until watching back their appearance on Don Krishner\u2019s show. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I saw that,\u201d McVie remembered, \u201cI said, \u2018Hang on a minute. Am I in the band?\u2019\u201d The keyboard player didn\u2019t necessarily blame Welch for this trend, though. Instead, she saw it as a product of their differing personalities. \u201cI don\u2019t know how it really happened,\u201d she commented, \u201cI guess I let myself get pushed back. Bob Welch was such an energetic, speedy guy. I was happy to let him do all the work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just boiled down to basic laziness on my part,\u201d McVie shrugged, and even Mick Fleetwood admitted that they should have been using more of her writings on-stage. Fortunately, McVie pushed herself to become one of the leading songwriters of the band, creating hits that they couldn\u2019t not include in their setlist. As a result, her contributions to the band have been much more widely lauded than they may have been at the time. <\/p>\n

When Nicks and Buckingham joined the group in the same year Welch departed, Fleetwood Mac suddenly had an unparalleled arsenal of songwriters to their name. Nicks contributed witchy tales of womanhood and heartbreak. Buckingham penned bitter songs about her. And McVie used her blues influences and keys to create something different. <\/p>\n

Although McVie might still, sometimes, be overshadowed by the impact of Nicks, her contributions to Fleetwood Mac simply cannot be understated. She would no longer hide in the shadow of her bandmates after their early years, proving her songwriting skills each and every time they created a new album, and maintaining her place as one of their greatest talents.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
