Shane Lowry has had some wonderful moments over the course of his distinguished golfing career, but there is no doubt that the final day at last year’s Ryder Cup will be right at the top of the bunch.

The Irishman played a key role in Europe’s triumph in Bethpage, with his singles clash with Russell Henley turning out to be a pivotal match.

The USA had mounted a big comeback on the final day of play, meaning a loss for Lowry would have left his team in a difficult position. However, he came up trumps to earn that half point needed to ensure Europe retained the Ryder Cup.

They had been subjected to some outrageous abuse from the home fans over the three days of play in New York, with Lowry and Rory McIlroy particular targets. Not only did they silence the boo boys with this win, but the also secure Europe’s first win on American soil since 2012.

Speaking to Paul Kimmage in a fantastic interview in the Irish Independent, Lowry said a recent conversation with a trio of England rugby players was at the forefront of his mind after the win.

It was way sweeter (than Rome in 2024).

It’s funny, I’d played in the pro-am at Wentworth a few weeks before with three of the England rugby players, Ben Earl, Marcus Smith and Jamie George, three great lads.

They said that winning away was the most satisfying thing in the world and it kind of stuck with me.

They sent me a text afterwards, a saying they have at Saracens: ‘Win away and clap.’

An Irish golfer and England rugby players might not be the most natural of friendships, but they were all in the same corner for Europe’s Ryder Cup win.

Shane Lowry aiming for more Ryder Cup success in 2027

Shane Lowry will be hoping for further Ryder Cup success when the event comes to Adare Manor in 2027, with the Offaly man all but nailed on to be included in the European team for a fourth successive edition.

The crowd will be a bit friendlier on that occasion, with Lowry likely to receive a particularly raucous welcome from the Irish fans.

Winning a third successive Ryder Cup would be some way to cement his legacy in the event.
