In the videos that announce the starting lineup on the giant scoreboard before kick-off, every Bayern Munich player turns to face the camera with their personal salute, greeting or goal celebration, the playful progression from the standard folding of arms. Except on Saturday evening, the No 9 turned around smiling, and cradling the golden trophy.

In the midweek DFB Pokal stroll against Magdeburg there had been a salute, the players welcoming Harry Kane on to the pitch with a guard of honour to commemorate his Ballon d’Or victory two nights before. This, however, was the real party, the moment where the England captain’s and Bayern’s successful union and the apex it has reached was celebrated in front of a global audience. There was every reason to believe it would be a full and satisfying victory lap, even in Der Klassiker, with proper competition so often bringing the best out of the Rekordmeister.

Dortmund, however, did not read the script. Neither did the football gods. Kane was not completely neutered in this and laid on yet another assist, nodding across goal to present Dayot Upamecano a second goal in successive Bundesliga games That looked like the winner until Fábio Silva’s 89th-minute equaliser for the visitors. Yet in between, there was frustration for the man who has walked on water since arriving in Munich. He clattered a penalty which could have made it 2-0 against the crossbar and hit the post from point-blank range when he could have made it 3-1, after Serhou Guirassy’s first equaliser and the Upamecano strike that put Bayern back in front.

Three years ago on Wednesday, Kane hit a hat-trick in his first Klassiker in a 4-0 win at Signal Iduna Park. Despite the cliche that BVB are Bayern’s bunnies, the champions have not had it all their own way in this fixture. This was Kane’s fourth Klassiker at the Allianz Arena, and Bayern have only won one of them. Many of those watching from around the world who tuned in to see Kane lift his personal trophy would have expected a subsequent procession to victory but having arrived level on points at the top of the table, Dortmund were able to leave Bavaria in the same position.

Harry Kane missed a penalty against Borussia Dortmund that could have made it 2-0 for the hosts. Photograph: Sebastian El-Saqqa/firo sportphoto/Getty Images

This was, as Ruhr Nachrichten’s Kevin Pinnow put it, “much more than just a point” for Dortmund. It was not a signal they are Bayern’s equal but a sign they could roll with the punches, that they could show guts and enterprise and find solutions, from the switch to a back four that blind-sided their hosts to the energy and daring in midfield, exemplified by Jobe Bellingham’s best performance since he arrived last year. The young Englishman is a symbol of the good Niko Kovac has done since arriving at the club, a combination of patience and high demand. The coach insisted earlier this year that Bellingham, despite a lack of numerical reward, was progressing ahead of schedule and this, finally was the proof. He might even have put BVB in front in the first half, but had a goal ruled out as the offside Carney Chukwuemeka – who also excelled – inadvertently stumbled into Jonas Urbig in the Bayern goal. “He is someone for the big stake,” enthused the sporting director, Ole Book. “He showed that today.”

Quick GuideBundesliga resultsShow

SV Elversberg 4-1 Mainz, Augsburg 1-2 Freiburg, Mönchengladbach 0-0 Paderborn, Schalke 0-2 RB Leipzig, Werder 2-0 Hoffenheim, Leverkusen 2-4 VfB Stuttgart, Bayern 2-2 Dortmund, Union Berlin 1-1 Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 Hamburg

Thank you for your feedback.

Yet as worthy as Dortmund were, little went for Bayern. The bad luck was not limited to plural pinging of aluminium and the effects will last for longer than Monday morning. Already without Vincent Kompany, who will not be rushed back into action after his recent hospitalisation with his assistant, Aaron Danks, holding the fort, the injury list is getting out of hand. Danks went into this fixture without Luis Díaz, Manuel Neuer and Jamal Musiala and lost a further three forward players during the course of the evening.

Jobe Bellingham had his best performance since arriving at Dortmund against Bayern. Photograph: Harry Langer/DeFodi Images/Shutterstock

Ismael Saibari injured his ankle ligaments in a collision with Gregor Kobel and has already had surgery, with the recovery to last at least three months. Serge Gnabry is expected to miss several weeks with a hamstring injury he picked up and, worst of all, Michael Olise went down off the ball with what appeared to be a knee problem in the closing minutes. Bayern will go into this week’s Champions League game with Atlético Madrid – surely the last game they would wish to face with a banged-up squad – with only two senior forward players available, Kane and the 18-year-old Lennart Karl.

Karl still almost won the game for the hosts, bending a shot from range against the top of the crossbar in stoppage time He might have many other chances to make himself the hero in the games to come. As will Kane, again and again. We will see quite how the immediate post-Ballon d’Or period will unfold. One of Kane’s key characteristics throughout his career has been his relentless availability, but part of his ascension to his best-ever self has been based on Kompany’s ability to rest his star turn and keep him fresh. With the current plethora of injuries, Danks is unlikely to have the same luxury.

It is impossible to talk about turning points in the season on Halloween. Yet Kane will be loading Bayern on his broad shoulders ever more than before, and Dortmund’s next challenge is to be brave enough to try to take advantage.

Talking points

If Sebastian Hoeness and his Stuttgart team were going to lift themselves out of a crisis of confidence it was always going to be not by eking out a gritty result, but by blasting their way back to health, and that is what they did at Leverkusen, winning 4-2 in a fixture that has been one of the Bundesliga’s must-watch match-ups of recent seasons. For all their attacking punch, Hoeness and company arrived having lost four out of five on the back of some profligate finishing. Here they were clinical in a testy game against a Werkself team who had chances of their own. “Unfortunately, we can’t play Leverkusen 34 times,” lamented the Champions League joint top scorer Ermedin Demirovic, who scored twice. “They’re always heated and exciting matches because both teams play with attacking intent.”

Leipzig strolled to a 2-0 win at an impotent Schalke – still yet to score a home goal – before facing Manchester City, an important step to Martín Demichelis shoring up his position. The Norwegian winger Antonio Nusa, who scored one and made one, excelled.

Niclas Füllkrug was at it again for Werder Bremen, after an attempted midweek DFB Pokal rescue act at his old club Borussia Dortmund, scoring twice to bring Werder level before their hopes were dashed by a late Marcel Sabitzer winner. The centre-forward blasted the northerners into the lead on Saturday against Hoffenheim, setting up a win that pushes them into the top five. It was his seventh straight Bundesliga game scoring, equalling the legendary Rudi Völler’s record from 1982-83. “I’m truly speechless,” said the goalkeeper Karl Hein, whose huge clearance set the goal up. “It’s a privilege to have him with us.” Even with his plan to revitalise Germany and make the squad younger, it is hard to see how Jürgen Klopp can omit Füllkrug when he announces his next Germany squad on Thursday.

[33
218,101,56,54,55
post-821990","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-football","tag-football","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
