Logging is big business here in Maine and one that\u2019s got
\nmore expensive with President Trump\u2018s tariffs and soaring diesel costs.<\/p>\n

Mike LeBrun is a general manager of Pleasant River Lumber
\nsawmill. He tells me tariffs have brought some lumber industry back to the US.<\/p>\n

But, he notes “it\u2019s difficult to see how a young man
\nwould want to go into the woods to make a living these days\u201d. <\/p>\n

That’s because, he says, the industry as a whole is seeing
\ntighter profit margins.<\/p>\n

That hasn’t, however, meant loggers are automatically
\nflocking to Democrat senate candidate Troy Jackson, himself a fifth-generation
\nlogger. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t make much of his logging credentials,\u201d LeBrun
\nsays.<\/p>\n

Republican incumbent, Senator Susan Collins, has held her seat
\nsince 1997. <\/p>\n

She has a reputation for bringing federal funds back to the
\nPine Street tree state. Still, the race is close and LeBrun says many Mainers
\nfeel she\u2019s \u201clike McDonald\u2019s – not the best but not the worst\u201d. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot to play for here. If Democrats want to take
