The unbeaten cruiserweight champion handles pressure well, but flush right hands consistently cause trouble. That crack in the armor turns their planned December 11 meeting into an explosive collision.

Trainer Stephen Edwards spotted the opening on the proposed Fury vs Joshua card in Cardiff. While he figures Opetaia enters as the favorite, he doubts the Australian stays out of danger for twelve full rounds.

I think Deontay Wilder has a chance vs Jai Opetaia. Opetaia will most likely be the favorite but he’s not refined or smooth defensively. If he doesn’t clip Deontay, he’s in serious danger throughout. Risky fight but I respect it. Especially for this era,” said Edwards on X.

The real test is Opetaia’s chin. Crisp southpaw boxing gives him an edge in ring generalship, yet recent cruiserweight defenses have shown concerning moments whenever opponents land cleanly.

Huseyin Cinkara rattled him during the second round of their clash in late 2025. Opetaia rallied to score an eighth round knockout, though the early scare arrived against an opponent everyone expected him to run through.

Noel Mikaelian produced an identical scare in September. A crisp right hook connected in round seven, forcing Opetaia to clinch immediately. He rallied once more, stopping Mikaelian in the ninth, yet the warning sirens rang out loud.

Opetaia is taking a risk here because a knockout loss wrecks the financial engine behind a David Benavidez clash. Benavidez wants Opetaia for legacy, unified belts, and a high-profile scalp. If Opetaia comes off a brutal stoppage, Benavidez gains almost nothing from beating him. The narrative shifts from “daring to be great against the division monster” to “picking up the pieces of damaged goods.”

Wilder must still land the equalizer. If Opetaia’s speed freezes the former heavyweight champion, Wilder might spend the night waiting for an opening that never arrives. His right hand remains the great equalizer, but banking on it to bail him out against Opetaia ignores what happened to his punch resistance and his trigger.

Zhilei Zhang needed only one clean counter right hand to completely turn Wilder around and leave him staring at the rafters.

Opetaia does not need to hit as hard as Zhang. He punches with devastating leverage from the southpaw stance, throws tight combinations rather than looping singles, and refuses to let opponents recover once they’re hurt.

When Cinkara and Mikaelian found Opetaia’s chin, Opetaia still walked through the fire to stop both men. Wilder, by contrast, has shown zero ability to absorb heavy contact and rally back since 2020.

Deontay Wilder has plenty of reasons to believe he can catch Jai Opetaia.
