Almost half are struggling to keep up with financial commitments, falling behind or having fallen behind.

One in seven often uses a credit card, overdraft or borrowed money to pay for food or bills after running short of cash.

A quarter of adults said they could not meet an unexpected £300 bill from spare money or affordable borrowing, while half said they could not last three months without borrowing if they lost their main source of income.

The findings come against a backdrop of deep wealth inequality in Scotland. A Scottish Government examination found that a third of adults have no private pension savings, while the least wealthy 10% of households have typical total wealth of just £7,600, compared with £1.3 million among the wealthiest tenth.

One in five Scottish households has insufficient savings to keep them above the poverty line for a month if they lose their income.

 Read More:

The consequences can already be seen among today’s pensioners, with 130,000 people in Scotland living in relative poverty after housing costs in 2022–25, according to the latest Scottish Government assessment.

Ms Crawford said Age Scotland had supported thousands of workers and hundreds of Scottish companies with retirement planning, and had seen the difference that good information could make.

“When people get high-quality information and advice, and the time to really think about their future, they feel more confident and empowered to make informed decisions,” she said.

But she warned that too many people were leaving retirement planning too late or had no access to support.

“We believe that there should be much more funding from the Scottish Government so employers, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can provide pensions and retirement planning for their staff throughout their working lives,” she said.

“While there are some really good and free services available, there isn’t enough and it doesn’t always do what people need.”

Millions of Scots risk an uncertain retirement without a financial plan (Image: Web)

Ms Crawford said the planned Pensions Dashboard—a digital service intended to let people see information about all their private pensions in one place—would help people understand what they had saved, but added that they would still need “solid, impartial advice” on what to do with the information.

She said Age Scotland’s own research showed a quarter of people over 50 who had not yet retired had no pension provision, while only 13% were confident they had saved enough to live on after stopping work.

“Financial pressures are also eroding people’s ability to prepare, with around three in ten people in their fifties saving less for retirement,” she said.

The anxiety continues after retirement, she added, with almost half of retired people saying they were not confident or were very worried that their savings and income would meet their needs. Fourteen per cent feared their money would run out.

One Edinburgh-based financial analyst said the findings pointed to a problem that went beyond a lack of pension knowledge.

“The concern is not simply that many people have failed to make a retirement plan. It is that planning only helps if people have enough money to put aside.

“When households are struggling to meet everyday costs or have little savings to fall back on, retirement can feel like a distant problem that they cannot afford to address.

“This study points to a risk that financial insecurity today will become a lack of security in later life. Better pension information matters, but it needs to be matched by action that makes saving realistic for people on lower incomes and those in insecure work.”

The Money and Pensions Service, an independent public body sponsored by the UK Government that provides free, impartial money and pensions guidance, said financial wellbeing remained “precarious” for many people, despite some signs of improvement in overall confidence and satisfaction.

Allison Barnes, Scotland manager at the service, said: “After years of hard work, people across Scotland should be able to look forward to a comfortable retirement.”

She said people should not leave their retirement to chance and that taking time to understand their pension could help them plan for the future they wanted.

Money and Pensions Service chief executive Oliver Morley said the findings showed the need to identify people facing financial difficulties and direct support towards them.

“The findings suggest that overall financial wellbeing in Scotland is moving closer to levels seen before the pandemic, with signs of slight improvement since last year’s report in measures such as financial confidence, satisfaction and resilience,” he said.

But the service said circumstances varied widely across the country, with the number of people at risk of needing debt advice increasing.

Barnes said people did not have to work through pension decisions alone.

“Pensions can feel complicated, but support is available to help you understand your options and make informed decisions,” she said.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “The State Pension is reserved to the UK Government. However, the Scottish Government is taking action to help people build greater financial security both now and in the longer term.

“We work closely with partners including the Money and Pensions Service and Citizens Advice Scotland who can help people improve their financial capability and access free, impartial guidance on money and pensions.”

Age Scotland said the study demonstrated the “stark challenge” facing people approaching retirement, warning that many lacked the…

[14
84,4176,4174,4175,56,54,55
post-822702","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-finance","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
