\n\t\u201cAll Quiet on the Western Front\u201d director Edward Berger<\/a> gave a brief update on \u201cThe Riders<\/a>,\u201d his upcoming A24<\/a> film starring Brad Pitt<\/a>. Speaking at Evolution Mallorca<\/a>, where he is the recipient of this year\u2019s Evolution Vision Award, the filmmaker confirmed they have already shot the film, which he calls a \u201csingular perspective story told through the eyes of Brad Pitt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a story of a man who\u2019s renovating a cottage in the \u201980s, in Ireland, waiting for his daughter and wife to show up,\u201d he said of the story, which is adapted from the eponymous novel by Tim Winton. \u201cOnly the daughter shows up, and then they go on a European Odyssey to find [the wife.] [They go] to Greece, Brussels, Amsterdam\u2026 I won\u2019t tell you what happens or if he finds her [laughs].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA24 financed and will distribute the upcoming film. Frequent Luca Guadagnino collaborator David Kajganich (\u201cBones and All,\u201d \u201cSuspiria\u201d) penned the screenplay, and producers include Ridley Scott\u2019s Scott Free, Berger\u2019s Nine Hours, Pitt\u2019s Plan B, and Kajganich. Further cast includes Julianne Nicholson, Danny Huston, Camille Cottin, Michael Smiley, and Lara Pulver.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe director also briefly mentioned \u201cThe Riders\u201d when speaking about one of his earlier films, the Berlinale breakout \u201cJack.\u201d Both films have seen Berger work with children, with \u201cJack\u201d starring then 12-year-old Ivo Pietzcker and \u201cThe Riders\u201d starring seven-year-old Coco Greenstone as Pitt\u2019s on-screen daughter.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou have too many needs,\u201d he recalled of shooting with a child star for \u201cJack.\u201d \u201c[Pietzcker] was shooting for six or eight weeks, so he needs a tutor for school, he needs someone to prep him [\u2026] The hard thing is the clock is running. We had an exemption from the city where we could shoot with him for six hours, and usually it\u2019s five hours. Every day I literally got the shot one minute before the six hours. It\u2019s really stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd we just made a film with another kid,\u201d he added of \u201cThe Riders.\u201d \u201cIt was the same thing. It\u2019s like every day you just get it just before they take them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the career-spanning conversation at the leading Mallorcan festival, Berger spoke about some of his most successful films, including the four-time-Oscar-winning war drama \u201cAll Quiet on the Western Front.\u201d The director recalled being offered the project by a longtime producer friend and having an immediate negative reaction because he was at a point in his career where he \u201cwanted to make an English-language film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Conclave\u2019 was in the works already and was percolating,\u201d he added. \u201cBut in the back of my mind, or actually in the front of my mind, I thought: I can\u2019t escape this. It\u2019s something that I am going to have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Austrian-Swiss helmer said he felt \u201cwe were at a time where, and it\u2019s only gotten worse, where international institutions that had brought us peace for a long time were being questioned. Nationalism was on the rise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know, a hundred years ago, life seemed glorious too,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe seemed to be at a similar point and it felt like something that international audiences could also be interested in because we don\u2019t usually see these films from the country [that] had actually originated those wars,\u201d he added of Germany, the country where he was born. \u201cTo bring the feeling of weight that I grew up with\u2014or responsibility or shame\u2014into that movie seemed to be interesting to me, and to share that with people from around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for his follow-up, the also Oscar-winning \u201cConclave,\u201d Berger said it took him \u201ctwo, three months to wash off\u201d \u201cAll Quiet.\u201d \u201cIt was almost traumatic afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEvery day I came home from the edit, went swimming in the lake and tried to wash it off,\u201d he added. \u201cIt felt like so much stress, so much chaos, so much destruction, and I kind of wanted order.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Conclave\u2019 was very much inspired by 1970s films, Alan J. Pakula, political conspiracy thrillers like \u2018All the President\u2019s Men,\u2019 \u2018Klute,\u2019 \u2018The Parallax View,\u2019\u201d he noted of his creative process. \u201cThose three films were the example for it. They have great editing rhythm and framing [of] people within the architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBerger felt that precise rhythm was \u201cfitting\u201d for a story that started from the image of several older men sitting in a room for long stretches of time. \u201cI was scared that people wouldn\u2019t be interested in watching a bunch of people vote for one Catholic [laughs]. So how do I make that interesting, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe director said he would make new cuts of the film every week and show it to his friends during the edit. \u201cAnd they\u2019d tear it apart,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just go like, \u2018Yeah, this was boring, this was great. You gotta go faster through this.\u2019 I don\u2019t want to get that after the premiere.
