And that\u2019s precisely what happens. A quick blowtorch to the back frame loosens the bolts, and Pala is able to swap the original part for a state-of-the-art titanium rear triangle in just a few minutes. Instead of the original hefty old Sturmy-Archer three-speed gearing, Brompton has developed its own new 12-speed system, which has a mini four-speed cassette on the outside, and three in the internal hub.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause the dimensions are the same, we\u2019re going to be able to strip the bike back completely,\u201d enthuses Pala. \u201cWe\u2019re then going to rebuild it around the main frame and fork.\u201d<\/p>\n

If bike maintenance isn\u2019t something you\u2019re comfortable with, there\u2019s a detailed list of all Brompton stores<\/a> and authorized dealers on the company\u2019s website, with around 150 across the USA. In the UK, especially around London, there\u2019s plenty of scope for repairs, and Brompton offers a complete service<\/a> at one of its dealerships for \u00a3295 (less than $400.)<\/p>\n It\u2019s this familiarity of design and attention to detail that has transformed the bicycle company into something of a global luxury brand. It\u2019s a bike for people who wouldn\u2019t necessarily call themselves cyclists, with a uniform in some countries that\u2019s more Lacroix than lycra.<\/p>\n \u201cWe’re very globally spread out,\u201d says Will Carleysmith, Brompton\u2019s chief design and engineering officer. \u201cThe UK is our most commuter-focused audience, but it represents just 16 percent of our business\u2014the rest of what we make goes overseas, with China taking 40 percent of our sales, interestingly with a 50-50 male\/female split.\u201d<\/p>\n In Asia, the Brompton is viewed quite differently than in the UK, where it\u2019s typically seen as a practical tool for urban commuting. \u201cIt\u2019s a super social, highly desirable tool that\u2019s much more about self-expression,\u201d claims Carleysmith. Collaborations are helping to underline this \u201cstyle\u201d narrative, too, with the likes of Barbour, Palace Skateboarding, Liberty London, Tour de France, LINE Friends, and art collaborations with Crew Nation and cultural luminaries including Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, and LCD Soundsystem.<\/p>\n But like any good 50th birthday, there have been both happy and sad tears. In 2022, Brompton sold its 1 millionth bike. During Covid lockdown, demand increased five-fold, but as a result of supply chain and shipping bottlenecks, rising costs, and heavy investment in new designs, pretax profits plunged by 99 percent to just $6,335 (\u00a34,602, or roughly the cost of a single Brompton T-Line One Speed<\/a>) for the year ending March\u202f31,\u202f2024.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not the only cycling brand faced with post-Covid<\/a> cash flow issues, but rather than being stuck with excess stock, its financial woes have been thanks to a global drop in demand and heavy investment, first with the Brompton Electric<\/a> range and the bigger, 20-inch all-terrain G Line<\/a>, which WIRED tested at launch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"And that\u2019s precisely what happens.
