US software giant Epic has confirmed that it will integrate a range of AI tools into its electronic patient record (EPR) solution, including clinical documentation for doctors. <\/p>\n
Speaking at the annual Users Group Meeting in Wisconsin, US on 19 August 2025, chief executive Judy Faulkner said that the firm is working on more than 160 AI projects.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Epic told Digital Health News: \u201cEpic\u2019s native AI charting is being developed, and we anticipate that it will be ready for limited use by early next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cEpic is doing the listening, using Haiku and Canto.<\/p>\n
\u201cMicrosoft<\/a> supplies Epic with Dragon Ambient AI technology<\/a>\u2013 transcription and diarization, as well as important note components.<\/p>\n \u201cEpic then takes all of that to create the final note and visit documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n They added that Epic customers will still be able to use \u201cother third parties to do ambient AI as they do today\u201d.<\/p>\n Haiku is Epic\u2019s iPhone and Android app which provides its EPR users with real-time access to clinical information and patient data, while Canto is its iPad app.<\/p>\n The company posted a video<\/a> on 6 August 2025, which demonstrated its AI charting capabilities, which uses software to automatically fill in parts of a patient\u2019s EPR, reducing clinician time spent on documentation, administrative work, and chart navigation.<\/p>\n Other AI features Epic plans to launch in 2026 include a discharge planning agent, patient-reported outcomes insights, pre-surgical risk calculator, a MyChart virtual assistant, patient-facing imaging results overview and a patient flow agent.<\/p>\n The use of AI scribing technology is a key part of the NHS 10 year health plan<\/a>, published on 3 July 2025, and government guidance,\u00a0published in April 2025<\/a>, encourages NHS clinicians to use generative AI to transcribe patient consultations.<\/p>\n Accurx<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Tandem Health<\/a>\u00a0announced in April 2025 that they have\u00a0launched an AI scribing tool across the NHS<\/a>\u00a0that transcribes, summarises and codes patient consultations into a trust\u2019s clinical record.<\/p>\n Commenting on Epic\u2019s announcement, Dr Ian Robertson, director at Tandem UK, told Digital Health News: \u201cGreat to see that Epic is validating the importance of AI in healthcare, showing how vital these technological developments will be over the coming years.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re excited about the positive reception and rapid uptake we\u2019ve seen, and recognise the importance of IT system providers continuing to enable a best-of-breed environment where the end users can select the best product for each of their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n Epic\u2019s news comes as its main rival, Oracle Health<\/a> launched a next-gen EPR solution<\/a> with AI and voice capabilities in August 2025, which is available for ambulatory providers in the US, pending regulatory approval.<\/p>\n
