She was exhausted, even though she was getting plenty of sleep. Despite her love of food, her appetite was nearly gone. And she\u2019d wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. No matter what she did, she felt like she was caught in a never-ending hangover.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u00083b6nr00mwwgx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same time, her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/reviews\/oura-ring-4?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oura Ring<\/a>, a health tracking smart ring that <a href=\"https:\/\/ouraring.com\/why-oura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claims to<\/a> give wearers a \u201cholistic picture\u201d of their health, was also giving her strange reports. Her basal body temperature was consistently higher than normal, far from the natural ups and downs she\u2019d become accustomed to. And she kept getting alerts that her ring was sensing \u201cmajor signs\u201d of a mysterious something straining her body.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u00093b6nwg87hpu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After a few weeks, she discovered a lump on the back of her neck. She went to her primary care provider, told her the symptoms, and showed her the data she\u2019d collected from her ring. The diagnosis came later: Hodgkin lymphoma.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000a3b6nn3bv68vj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gooding recognizes she probably would have figured out the problem eventually, without the help of her ring. But the ring\u2019s alerts made her take the condition more seriously, she said, and validated her physical signs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000b3b6nf8pxh2ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBeing a nurse, I was just kind of like \u2018Oh, it\u2019s probably nothing. I\u2019m probably just fighting something viral, I\u2019ll just wait for it to go away,\u2019\u201d Gooding said. \u201cIt kind of was like, okay, you\u2019re not crazy, something is actually wrong.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000c3b6nqcojwa97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@otikkiyousoofine\/video\/7478431303315000619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted a video<\/a> about her experiences to TikTok, the comments filled with others reporting similar experiences with their trackers, which they said foresaw everything from pregnancies to blood clots. Elsewhere, paralympian Hunter Woodhall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DG07nGOvYMn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">credited his Oura Ring<\/a> to alerting him to his appendicitis, while others have been notified of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AppleWatch\/comments\/syr4fx\/my_watch_told_me_i_had_covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Covid-19 infections<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/studies-indicate-fitness-trackers-can-predict-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">other illnesses<\/a> through similar health and fitness trackers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000d3b6n70lvj803@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/news\/2023\/study-reveals-wearable-device-trends-among-us-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one in three Americans<\/a> uses some type of tracker, and today\u2019s top-of-the-line devices can measure sleep oxygen levels, stress levels, body temperature, menstrual cycles, heart rate variability and even glucose levels. These aren\u2019t the step and calorie counters of yore; they\u2019re sophisticated medical technology. And they\u2019re increasingly being used as a window into our internal health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000e3b6nt6d0myku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sharon Bergquist, an internist at Emory Healthcare and an associate professor at Emory University School of Medicine, has seen a rise in patients using these trackers. A few have even come in because of alerts they\u2019ve received, much like Gooding. Their concerns are wide-ranging \u2014 some have come in after receiving alerts of possible arrhythmias, others have concerns about sleep or possible apnea.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000f3b6npcgncq1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the absence of pain or other alarming symptoms, patients usually seek medical help when something is off visually, she said \u2014 think of swelling that won\u2019t go down or unexpected bruising. With trackers, that chain of events is changing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2156912737-20250819043517072.jpg\" alt=\"Oura Rings are one popular health tracking option.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2662\" width=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000g3b6n06klyy41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese trackers can hint that there could be something wrong, sometimes before there are visible changes that a person would detect,\u201d Bergquist said. \u201cThat just can speed up the attention.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000h3b6ntqvshhbh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Bergquist has seen some false alarms. Patients sometimes think their heart rate is off when it\u2019s fine; their tracker\u2019s depicted sleep inconsistencies aren\u2019t apnea; or variations in their pulse data are not clinically significant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000i3b6n8jm4iemg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is still a benefit to having access to the objective data a tracker can provide. Our perceptions of our own habits tend to be skewed, Bergquist said. We tend to assume we\u2019re healthy people. Having daily feedback about what\u2019s going on internally can help nudge us toward healthy habits, in ways our own beliefs or opinions can\u2019t.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000j3b6n8hpht0ag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And yet these wearable trackers, with all their data and quantification, feed a desire for a more scientific look into one\u2019s personal health. There may be a sense that something is \u201csneaking up on us in our bodies,\u201d said Anna Kirkland, a professor who studies health and discrimination at the University of Michigan \u2014 like a disease we don\u2019t know about, or a defect we can\u2019t feel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000k3b6n9d042j48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While these devices are imperfect, they give users the impression that the technology can provide some notion of control. But even with the best trackers money can buy, there\u2019s a limit to what we can accomplish alone, Kirkland said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000l3b6nmdonbftg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can do all the right things, die anyway,\u201d Kirkland said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000m3b6ngu0os0ey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Part of the driving force behind these trackers is the nature of the diseases we\u2019re facing today. In the past, common causes of death were infectious diseases, maladies like bronchitis or tuberculosis. Now, the diseases that are killing the most people are conditions like heart disease, often linked to poor diet and lack of exercise. That shift is part of what makes wearable fitness monitors so appealing\u2014\u2013 there\u2019s a feeling that these are lifestyle maladies, which could be within our control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000n3b6nnua9buv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s a limit to how many new insights a device can provide. If you\u2019re buying a device because you want to walk more and need a step tracker, you likely already know you live a sedentary lifestyle, Kirkland said. While a watch, or a ring, might track that for you, it can\u2019t make more leisure time in your day, nor can it give you access to a park or another safe place to walk. Ditto for access to fresh, healthy food, clean air and so on.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-1314050806.jpg\" alt=\"The metrics and data from fitness trackers can make it seem like we control every aspect of our own health, which isn't always the case.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2832\" width=\"4240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000o3b6nfvtseflt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Therein lies the problem. While these products can be helpful, they contribute to the individualist idea that we alone \u2014 if only we carefully monitor the daily findings of a $300 gadget \u2014 can bring about our best, healthiest selves. And that idea, Kirkland said, is just not correct.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000p3b6nr12fcufu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHealth depends on a whole host of governmental and communal and economic factors that individuals alone can\u2019t control,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000q3b6n5y9p9436@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And what about all the metrics we can\u2019t concretely measure? Even while the data may seem within our control, overrelying on those numbers can bring issues. While tracking devices can help with getting habits \u201cin the right ballpark,\u201d Bergquist said, some things can\u2019t be tracked. Intuitive qualities like mental and spiritual health can\u2019t be quantified by a watch or ring, yet they affect our day-to-day existence. There can also be contradictions: On some days Bergquist has woken up feeling refreshed, but her tracker will tell her she didn\u2019t get enough deep sleep.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000r3b6nor0fib9h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite all the science and the data and the numbers, nothing beats one\u2019s own intuition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000s3b6ncvb8tql5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI believe myself and my body more than I\u2019m going to believe the device,\u201d Bergquist said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000t3b6nnxkd4rft@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gooding, the nurse, first bought her ring to help track her menstrual cycle. She\u2019d just gotten off oral contraceptives, and the ring was a way for her to understand her cycle and her body\u2019s ups and downs. It happened to give her a wider window than she\u2019d thought. Now, even while she is in chemotherapy, the ring\u2019s data still validates her own instincts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmekay19u000u3b6nooqlxekr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt doesn\u2019t replace the need for an actual person,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a nice tool to have.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>              <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><script async src=\"\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Facebook Tweet Email Link Nikki Gooding didn\u2019t know what was happening, but something was up.
