Research from the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.resolutionfoundation.org\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Resolution Foundation <\/a>showed the cost of essential goods have stayed significantly high, more than the &#8216;peak&#8217; of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/cost-living-hell-households-battling-34741104#:~:text=A%20snapshot%20survey%20of%20people&#039;s,over%20the%20past%20two%20years&amp;text=Families%20are%20battling%20under%20the,two%20years%2C%20research%20has%20revealed.\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cost of living crisis back in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Wages are stagnant, and cost of essentials are stubbornly high, many are unable to afford the daily necessities due to household bills being so extreme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Data from The Food Foundation highlight how 13.9 percent of households in the UK experienced food insecurity in January 2025. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/energy-bills\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Energy bills<\/a> rose to \u00a33.9 billion at the end of 2024. These include:<\/p>\n<p>Universal CreditState pensionPension creditDisability living allowancePersonal independence payment (PIP)Child benefitCarer&#8217;s allowanceAttendance allowanceEmployment support allowanceIncome supportJobseeker&#8217;s allowance<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/how-to-have-your-benefits-paid\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">government&#8217;s website <\/a>shows how and when state benefits are paid. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-work-pensions\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DWP<\/a> also aims to finish the migration of all &#8216;legacy benefits&#8217; to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/what-universal-credit-benefit-explained-13390461\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Universal Credit<\/a> by January 2026. If you receive income support, tax credit, housing benefit and jobseeker&#8217;s allowance then a notice should have been given already to move to Universal Credit.<\/p>\n<p>Pension payment dates in September<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Basic state pension is paid into bank accounts the same sort of way benefits are paid; every four weeks, and if you check the last two digits of your national insurance (NI) number that coincides with the day you receive your pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The days based on those numbers are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>00 to 19: Monday20 to 39: Tuesday40 to 59: Wednesday60 to 79: Thursday80 to 99: FridayWhen will benefit rates go up?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In April, all benefits value went up by 1.7 percent and this applied to all working-age benefits: universal credit, PIP, DLA, carer&#8217;s allowance, attendance allowance, ESA and more. State pension has risen by 4.1 percent, up \u00a3472 a year which matches wage growth too in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For the future, next April all those that claim Universal Credit will get an above-inflation increase to their income after Labour&#8217;s welfare bill. This will happen yearly until 2029, the first year will be at least 2.3 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, the monthly payment rate for the health part of Universal Credit for new claimants will be cut by just over half: \u00a3205 to \u00a350 and this will be frozen until 2029. Anyone who thinks they are eligible for it should apply ASAP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Additional help available and the details of them can be found on the government website but they are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Budgeting advance loansDiscretionary Housing PaymentHousehold Support FundCharitable grantsEnergy provider helpCouncil tax reductionUp to 30 hours of free childcare<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The questions on whether the energy price cap is going up is yet to be announced for October to December, but will be announced at the end of August. Ofgem&#8217;s price cap has been decreased for July to September from \u00a31,849 to \u00a31,720.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">About the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/cost-of-living-were-here-to-help\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cost of Living<\/a> Payment scheme, the DWP has not said anything about its continuation. For those households that are eligible the last payment was and should have been made between the 6th February and 22nd February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For mental health support: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/how-we-can-help\/contact-samaritan\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samaritans<\/a> can be reached 24 hours a day, in the UK and Ireland, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/nhs-services\/mental-health-services\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS England <\/a>offer their <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/nhs-services\/mental-health-services\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online mental health triage service<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/information-support\/helplines\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mind<\/a> run their support line to speak about how you&#8217;re feeling confidentially.
