With the images one year apart, the contrast shows how bright a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:supernova;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">supernova<\/a> is, and how that brightness fades over time.<\/p>\n<p>What is it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The supernova explosion, designated as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/contents\/media\/images\/2025\/202\/01K072GRDZVK5DJ2HZWFPCD3J3?utm_id=2025-202&amp;utm_campaign=inbox_astronomy&amp;utm_source=roman&amp;news=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SN 2018gv,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">SN 2018gv,<\/a> is found in the spiral galaxy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/hubble-telescope-watches-supernova-fade-over-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NGC 2525;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NGC 2525<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/asset\/hubble\/supernova-in-ngc-2525\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:According to NASA,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">According to NASA,<\/a> Hubble began observing the supernova after an amateur astronomer named Koichi Itagaki first detected it in early 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Where is it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NGC 2525 is approximately 70 million light-years away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Earth.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Earth. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Two images of stars in deep space side by side. Riess (STScI, JHU), SH0ES Team<\/p>\n<p>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SN 2018gv is classified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/type-ia-supernovae\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Type la supernova;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Type la supernova<\/a>, a rare type of stellar explosion. Supernovae of this type are also known as &#8220;standard candles&#8221; because they can reach a consistent peak brightness that astronomers use to calculate distances very precisely.
