Originally published in 1961, the novel follows Josephine, a young woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/feb\/23\/the-ha-ha-jennifer-dawson-novel\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on the edge of a nervous breakdown<\/a>. Fans have sussed out a semi-autobiographical quality in this one, and compared the book to better-known bedfellows like <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/132\/9780060837020\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Bell Jar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m excited by the promise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-tls.com\/regular-features\/in-brief\/the-ha-ha-jennifer-dawson-book-review-catherine-taylor\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gut-punch sentences<\/a>. Following the Snowdons, a well-heeled Black family in D.C., this novel explores the country\u2019s founding sin through\u2014what else?\u2014a dark, traumatic family secret.<\/p>\n<p>Praised on its 1991 release for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/book-reviews\/carolivia-herron\/thereafter-johnnie\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">incantatory prose<\/a>\u201d and a wildly ambitious scope, the summary suggests incredible prescience. The English writer close read middle-class village life in her tightly constructed novels of manners, and reclaimed \u201cspinsterhood\u201d for glorious loners everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Her arguable masterpiece follows the vain Leonora Eyre over and around a fraught love quadrangle with a widowed antiques dealer, his nephew, and some other motley souls. McNally Editions calls the forthcoming re-release \u201ca noir fantasia, a symphony of bloody horror, and a woozy, erotic tour of night-side L.A.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orartswatch.org\/farewell-to-portland-novelist-todd-grimson\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">late, beloved Grimson<\/a> should be much better known, so I\u2019m especially keen to sink my teeth into this one.
