href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health<\/a> social media policy being drafted will gag frontline health workers speaking up publicly for patient care in Australia, as the government agency insists it is an update to an existing policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/ce1ecb0bfcdb6e6876efa532c\/files\/0f29bbde-6fb7-8377-2391-a44030d698e2\/DRAFT_Social_Media_Policy_June_2025.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cfinal draft\u201d document<\/a>, social media subject to the rules includes \u201cinternal communication tools\u201d such as Microsoft Teams, and instant messaging software applications including WhatsApp, as well as social media networking sites and forums for discussion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW Health\u2019s social media guidelines, published on their website,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.nsw.gov.au\/social\/Pages\/social-for-staff-faqs.aspx\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> includes an FAQ<\/a> which states \u201cthere is no such thing as \u2018private\u2019 social media \u2026 remember that any content you believe to be confidential can be copied or recorded and posted by someone else\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The final draft document states \u201cstaff should report any concerns about their own use of social media or that of a colleague, to their manager\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under the principles for personal use of social media, it instructs that staff must not \u201cengage in any activity that may adversely affect \u2026 public trust in their employing agency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The union has seen a growing number of cases where NSW Health is \u201cusing internal policies to intimidate, silence or discipline medical staff who speak out publicly\u201d, Dr Nicholas Spooner, the president of the NSW branch of the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe latest staff communications policy is a clear attempt to gag frontline voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/jan\/19\/nsw-psychiatrists-threatening-to-resign-say-its-not-about-money-its-about-the-collapse-of-the-system\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The state\u2019s psychiatrists threatened to resign<\/a> in December and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/apr\/08\/with-a-drip-in-his-arm-this-patient-came-out-of-a-sydney-hospital-to-support-striking-doctors\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public doctors\u2019 strike in April<\/a> saw many workers take to social media to speak out about workforce issues compromising patient care in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asmof councillor Dr Ian Korbell said the health ministry wants frontline workers to be compliant employees who do their job and do not have any role in advocacy \u201cbut doctors actually have a responsibility to advocate for their patients\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAs a psychiatrist, I advocate for change in the mental health sector, which, in my view, in New South Wales is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/mar\/19\/sydney-hospitals-plan-to-increase-mental-health-beds-stymied-by-psychiatrist-shortage-court-hears\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underperforming at a really poor level<\/a>, and I think the only way for those changes to happen is actually to \u2026 put this to the people, because the people are the only thing that changes politicians\u2019 minds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe idea that advocacy for improvements in the system is a bad thing, but putting up with an inadequate service is a good thing, seems ill-informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Korbell said the inclusion of internal messaging as part of the policy was \u201cOrwellian\u201d with frontline healthcare workers needing to be able to debrief and let off steam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW Health states its core values are collaboration, openness, respect and empowerment but \u201cthe problem is that the actual culture isn\u2019t like that\u201d, Korbell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A NSW Health spokesperson said the agency was updating its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.nsw.gov.au\/social\/Pages\/social-for-staff.aspx\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">existing social media guidance for staff<\/a> in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.nsw.gov.au\/culture-and-inclusion\/ethics-hub\/use-of-social-media-in-a-private-capacity\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cuse of social media in a private capacity\u201d guidance published<\/a> by the Office of the Public Service Commission in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The agency said it was consulting with NSW Health staff, health agencies and unions on this new draft, which is \u201cyet to be finalised and published\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNSW Health is
