And it\u2019s for good reason\u2014protein, alongside carbohydrates and fat, plays a starring role in muscle health, immunity, satiety, and even hair, skin, and nail strength. \u201cResearch shows that adequate protein intake can help support healthy body composition, glucose metabolism, and heart health, regardless of whether the protein comes from a plant or animal source,\u201d explains registered dietitian and writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycrohnsandcolitisteam.com\/writers\/6862e18c8430857019e5e6ea\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Staci Gulbin<\/a>, MS, MEd, RDN. While protein bars and shakes can be helpful, whole-food toppings can sneak in extra protein and bring along vitamins, minerals, and flavor. \u201cBy adding protein-rich topping[s] to your meals, you can more easily meet your daily protein needs,\u201d Gulbin says.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The best part? Zenker recommends adding it to potatoes, eggs, tacos, nachos, pasta dishes, stir fries, soups, and even popcorn. For dessert, \u201cmix powdered peanut butter with cocoa powder, sweetener, and a splash of milk for a chocolate peanut butter sauce that can be drizzled onto fruit, toast, oatmeal, [or] yogurt.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  Edamame  <\/p>\n<p> Salted edamame.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> One quarter cup of <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/health\/nutrition-diet\/edamame-nutrition\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">edamame<\/a> has 14 grams of protein and plenty of fiber. Zenker suggests roasting it as a snack or swapping it in for croutons on salads.
