John Eales can pinpoint the moment the penny dropped for this Wallabies crop, and reckons Australian rugby\u2019s \u201cskill revolution\u201d will ensure their mounting injury toll doesn\u2019t spoil the momentum.<\/p>\n

A battle-scarred Australia<\/a> will face Argentina<\/a> in Townsville next Saturday, their first Test since a historic 1-1 South African leg that offered genuine hope of the side\u2019s first Rugby Championship<\/a> title in a decade.<\/p>\n

Victory in Johannesburg a fortnight ago, Australia\u2019s first in 62 years, was something not even former Test skipper and two-time World Cup winner Eales and his star-studded team achieved.<\/p>\n

But their success has come at a cost, with in-form fullback Tom Wright<\/a> (knee) the latest injury blow to a side that pushed the British and Irish Lions<\/a> in a 2-1 series loss.<\/p>\n

Scrumhalf Nic White<\/a> and centre Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii<\/a> were both concussed in the first half, and regular skipper Harry Wilson<\/a> (knee) missed Saturday\u2019s Cape Town loss.<\/p>\n

James Slipper (concussion) and Dylan Pietsch<\/a> (broken jaw) were also injured in the Rugby Championship opener in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

Flyhalf Ben Donaldson<\/a> (groin) was ruled out before that game, while Harry Potter<\/a>, Matt Faessler<\/a>, Allan Alaalatoa<\/a>, Tom Lynagh<\/a> and Jake Gordon<\/a> \u2013 the latter pair the starting halves against the Lions \u2013 didn\u2019t make the trip. <\/p>\n

Still the Wallabies, who have operated mostly without back-to-back John Eales<\/a> Medal winner Rob Valetini<\/a>, had their moments in a 30-22 Cape Town loss on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Eales believes the side\u2019s light-bulb moment came in their gut-wrenching 29-26 loss to the Lions in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were a bit underdone (in the Brisbane opener), but that was just a huge game,\u201d he told reporters at the book launch of former Reds<\/a> and Wallabies coach John Connolly in Brisbane on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though they lost that game, they went from being a team that thought they could win to being a team that started to believe they could win, to being a team that knew they could win, and (winning in) Sydney put the stamp on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Proud Queensland Reds champion Eales said improved club environments were behind the Wallabies\u2019 return from the depths of a failed 2023 World Cup campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just this year\u2019s hard work, it\u2019s a number of years of very hard work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe depth that we\u2019ve been able to develop, it\u2019s been in a skill-led revolution in Australian rugby.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coaches around the country in the Super Rugby teams, they\u2019re all very highly skill-focused coaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe players are playing at a higher skill level, so they\u2019re able to do more and they\u2019re challenging teams for longer periods of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not able to maintain momentum against the opposition, the best in the world, then you will never win those big games consistently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just been really impressed and so proud of the team and what they\u2019ve been able to achieve this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you feel that there\u2019s plenty more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wright\u2019s shoes will need feeling, but Eales, unwilling to nominate a replacement, expects the Wallabies to cope.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, a lot of injuries, but I think there\u2019s not a lot of panic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Brumbies<\/a> have been a great example of a team that have over the years replaced a lot of people who have been injured but had strong systems and very high skill levels.<\/p>\n
