Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a came down to an uphill sprint as expected, but the day’s winner was a huge surprise. Groupama-FDJ’s David Gaudu pipped pre-stage favorite Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) to get the victory in Ceres, Italy.<\/p>\n

Stage 2 winner and overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was once again involved in the action, finishing third on the day to grab a few bonus seconds and add to his advantage over most of his GC rivals.<\/p>\n

How it happenedThe penultimate day of racing in Italy saw four riders form the early break, with Alessandro Verre (Ark\u00e9a-B&B Hotels), Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost), Patrick Gamper (Jayco-AlUla), and Luca Van Boven (Intermarch\u00e9-Wanty) hoping to go the distance on the lumpy stage. The peloton only allowed the escapees to get a modest advantage, with Lidl-Trek making the effort to keep things under control.<\/p>\n
