{"id":96288,"date":"2025-08-27T12:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T12:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/96288\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T12:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T12:27:09","slug":"material-works-extends-hackney-home-into-an-oversized-bay-window","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/96288\/","title":{"rendered":"Material Works extends Hackney home into an oversized bay window"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London architecture studio Material Works has updated a Victorian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hackney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hackney<\/a>, extending into its garden with a large double-height bay window framed with natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named Hackney Bay House, the project involved transforming what the studio described as a &#8220;dark and confined&#8221; dwelling into an open, light-filled series of spaces for a family.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240304 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/material-works-hackney-bay-house-extension_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1193.jpg\" alt=\"Rear view of Hackney Bay House in London\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Material Works has updated a Victorian home in Hackney<\/p>\n<p>Despite being located in a conservation area, the neighbouring home had been extensively expanded before this status was granted, giving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.material-works.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Material Works<\/a> a precedent to extend the client&#8217;s dwelling into its rear garden.<\/p>\n<p>Taking cues from the visual language of the terraced street, the extension was conceived of as an oversized bay window made from natural stone, scaling up a familiar architectural motif to bring light and garden views into a new dining area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/material-works-hackney-bay-house-extension_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1193.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of London house extension by Material Works\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A double-height bay window was added to the home&#8217;s rear<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The existing terrace of houses has a clear rhythm to the rear, articulated by large bay windows at ground level,&#8221; Material Works director Dickon Hayward told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our new elevation reinterprets this, extending the glazing down to the lower ground level, with larger panes and framed in natural stone,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/material-works-hackney-bay-house-extension_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen interior at home renovation by Material Works\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>Open-plan living spaces are located on the ground floor<\/p>\n<p>The lower ground floor of the home has been completely reconfigured to house a singular living, dining and kitchen area, slightly sunken at the rear in order to maximise its ceiling height and help to demarcate its different areas.<\/p>\n<p>At the front of the home, an entertaining space overlooks a light well that sits below street level, while in the centre the kitchen is located alongside a timber staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Stepping down at the rear of the home, the living and dining area expands into a side extension topped by a glass ceiling and the double-height bay window extension, where it is overlooked by a new mezzanine study area on the level above.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/04\/10\/bindloss-dawes-lordship-house-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bindloss-dawes-lordship-house-london-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Lordship House by Bindloss Dawes\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Bindloss Dawes adds exposed concrete and brick extension to London terrace\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The space is articulated with the creation of a new level change and lowered floors increase the ceiling height and provide a generous proportion,&#8221; Hayward said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the rear elevation, this space opens vertically to create a double height space in front of the new bay window \u2013 allowing the daylight to be drawn deep into the centre of the plan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overlooking the bay, a new mezzanine level creates a place for home working \u2013 offering a degree of separation and privacy while still being connected to the communal space below and offering elevated views into the garden,&#8221;
