So how does he manage to stay energized all day while sticking to his nutrition goals? <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-01acf7\" class=\"body-graf\">The TODAY weatherman and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/specials\/start-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Start TODAY app<\/a>&#8216;s Chief Motivation Officer relies on a few small meals that are packed with both protein and fiber, he <a href=\"http:\/\/prevention.com\/al-roker-start-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shared with Prevention magazine.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-13966d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI have one glass of cold-brew coffee in the morning when I\u2019m going through the weather stuff,\u201d he told the outlet. After that, he&#8217;ll have non-fat yogurt and &#8220;maybe a banana,&#8221; Al added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4b43cc\" class=\"body-graf\">But when it&#8217;s time for lunch, he opts for a meal that&#8217;s full of gut-healthy fiber and filling protein: He&#8217;ll have a salad with salmon or chopped chicken with grains or tomato. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-68d0ea\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/salmon-vs-chicken-rcna209758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Salmon and chicken<\/a> are excellent sources of protein, which helps build and maintain muscle mass and keeps him feeling satisfied for longer. Meanwhile, leafy greens, whole grains and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/high-fiber-vegetables-rcna124606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vegetables<\/a> are prime sources of fiber, which supports gut health and digestion, but also has benefits for heart health and blood sugar control.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e1924a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDinner tends to be relatively lean protein, mostly fish and some chicken,\u201d the TODAY co-host said. \u201cProbably once a week we have steak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-265da8\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/specials\/start-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Start TODAY app<\/a> has tons of simple recipes, similar to Al&#8217;s favorites. From a Berry &amp; Banana Greek Yogurt Parfait to Pan Seared Garlic &amp; Lemon Salmon, the meals in the app are simple yet delicious. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c1b0e2\" class=\"body-graf\">The focus on protein and fiber makes a ton of sense considering how Al has been able to lose \u2014 and maintain \u2014\u00a0his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/al-roker-weight-loss-tips-rcna210475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">100-pound weight loss<\/a> following gastric bypass surgery in 2002. As a result of the procedure, which made his stomach smaller, Al focuses on eating smaller, nutritionally-dense meals throughout the day. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3d5f3e\" class=\"body-graf\">But, as he told Prevention, his mindset isn&#8217;t all or nothing. Instead, he&#8217;s developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/al-roker-diet-tips-rcna159085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a more balanced perspective<\/a> when it comes to food and exercise, allowing himself to enjoy his favorite foods here and there. And, if he slips up on his diet, he doesn&#8217;t beat himself up. He just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/al-roker-diet-tips-rcna159085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gets right back on track<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-66534f\" class=\"body-graf\">And though he tries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/walking-saved-al-rokers-life-5-mindset-motivation-tips-rcna186157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">get at least a few miles of walking<\/a> in every day, Al told the magazine, sometimes his schedule makes that challenging. On those more jam-packed days, he just tries to walk to the office or get in 20 minutes of weight training, rather than entirely giving up on exercise for the day.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-51ca07\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cModeration rather than deprivation is better in the long run,\u201d he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/al-roker-weight-loss-tips-rcna210475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously<\/a>, noting that his mantra is, &#8220;Something is better than nothing.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Regular TODAY viewers know that Al Roker takes his health seriously.
