But little is still known about the impact of such diets<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the study, researchers discovered\u00a036.5 per cent of the children, who were aged four on average, were deficient in vitamin D and 37.7 per cent had an iron deficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Over a follow up of four years, they also found that age was a factor for low iron levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Every additional month of age increased a child&#8217;s odds of developing vitamin D deficiency by four per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Older children were more likely to present with iron deficiency anemia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But amongst the picky eaters, &#8216;there was also no association between age and iron deficiency&#8217;, the researchers from the National University Hospital, Singapore, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;These findings could be related to the common use of formula milk when younger, which is fortified with nutrients including iron, thereby protecting against nutritional deficiencies.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They acknowledged, however, the study did have limitations, including its small size.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;As it was based on children whose caregivers agreed for blood investigations to be performed, these parents could have been more concerned regarding their child\u2019s dietary habits,&#8217; they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-365e0bdf99d55a9b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/48461571-15039687-The_number_of_diagnoses_of_autism_among_both_men_and_women_have_-a-16_175631296803.jpeg\" height=\"470\" width=\"633\" alt=\"A recent study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found autism diagnoses had risen by an 'exponential' 787 per cent in 20 years in England\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">A recent study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found autism diagnoses had risen by an &#8216;exponential&#8217; 787 per cent in 20 years in England\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;This could have motivated them to proceed with blood investigations.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">If left untreated, vitamin D deficiencies can trigger more serious health issues including\u00a0bone deformities like rickets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Other side effects of low vitamin D include muscle pain, bone pain, pins-and-needles in the hands or feet and weakness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Typically, the NHS says in summer months we should get all the vitamin D we need from sunshine, but in winter months some people need supplements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Meanwhile, it should be possible to get enough iron through a balanced diet, but some people with low iron need tablets like ferrous fumarate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Symptoms of low iron also include fatigue, shortness of breath, paler skin than usual and headaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It comes as <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-15031113\/autism-millions-undiagnosed-girls-diagnosis-test-england.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US research earlier this week<\/a> suggested autism diagnoses in young girls may be flying under the radar because\u00a0their symptoms are milder than boys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The findings have prompted concern that girls are missing out on key treatment and therapy that is leaving them prone to other health issues later on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In England, the number of children seeking help for suspected autism has spiralled to an all-time high in Covid&#8217;s wake.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to latest NHS figures, almost 130,000 under 18s in England were still awaiting an assessment in December 2024\u2014a six-fold increase on the 20,000 logged in December 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts have long warned that young people are facing an &#8216;invisible crisis&#8217;, with a system that has repeatedly failed to keep pace with rising demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Autism is not a disease and people have it from the moment they are born, although it may not be spotted until childhood and sometimes much later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It exists on a spectrum. Some people will be able to lead fully functioning lives with no additional help.
