We were devastated when we exclusively reported just over a year ago that Joaquin Phoenix had exited a gay romance<\/a> meant to be directed by Todd Haynes<\/a> just days before it was to begin production. The project collapsed and seemed to be permanently shelved, but Deadline<\/a> now reports that the project is hoping to be revived, this time with Pedro Pascal<\/a> in the lead role.<\/p>\n

No deals for Pascal are made, and the producers would have to work around a busy schedule for Pascal that includes two \u201cAvengers\u201d movies, but the hope is for the film<\/a> to shoot in Guadalajara, Mexico in early 2026.<\/p>\n

The project also now has a title, \u201cDe Noche,\u201d and Danny Ramirez, the \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d actor who was originally attached to star in the version alongside Phoenix, is also expected to return. <\/p>\n

Reps for the film\u2019s producer Killer Films and for Pascal did not respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

IndieWire reported last August that the film was likely meant to be an explicit, homosexual love story, potentially with an NC-17 rating, that would be set in the 1930s. The film had financing and international sales in place that hinged on Phoenix\u2019s involvement, but his exit forced the hands of producers. <\/p>\n

Why Phoenix exited is still something of a mystery, and at Venice this time last year while promoting \u201cJoker: Folie a Deux,\u201d he declined to comment<\/a> and said that if he were to answer and share his opinion without the other creatives to give their perspective, \u201cit just doesn\u2019t feel like that would be right. I am not sure how that would be helpful. I don\u2019t think I will.\u201d<\/p>\n

His exit was especially shocking considering that Phoenix had worked to develop the script from writer Jon Raymond and brought it specifically to producer Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler\u2019s Killer Films banner. Vachon called the situation a \u201ctragedy\u201d<\/a> but said there was no particular gossip to share. Haynes too said in December he was hopeful the film could be resurrected in another form<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe most tragic part about it, in my mind, is Todd Haynes is 62,\u201d Vachon said at the time. \u201cHe\u2019s not old but there\u2019s a finite number of films that he will be able to do in his lifetime. I consider him one of the most extraordinary film artists of his generation. The idea that his time was wasted and that a movie is not a result of those years of working closely with Joaquin, that is the tragedy to me and that I can\u2019t get over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vachon has worked with Haynes dating back to his directorial debut \u201cPoison\u201d way back in 1991, and she\u2019s been behind some of his other classics, including \u201cSafe,\u201d \u201cVelvet Goldmine,\u201d \u201cFar From Heaven,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Not There,\u201d and \u201cCarol.\u201d Haynes last directed 2023\u2019s \u201cMay December.\u201d <\/p>\n

Pascal this year has been as busy and in-demand as any actor in Hollywood, starring in Celine Song\u2019s \u201cMaterialists,\u201d Ari Aster\u2019s \u201cEddington,\u201d the Marvel film \u201cFantastic Four: First Steps,\u201d and leading the second season of \u201cThe Last of Us\u201d for HBO. He\u2019ll next be seen in the \u201cStar Wars\u201d spinoff film of his hit series \u201cThe Mandalorian,\u201d titled \u201cThe Mandalorian and Grogu,\u201d arriving May 22, 2026. <\/p>\n
