Of the 32 US Open seeds in the draw at the start of the tournament, six were American.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/taylor-fritz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Fritz<\/a> came agonisingly close to winning the US Open title last year. However, he lost to Jannik Sinner in the final in straight sets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2170869533-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jannik Sinner (R) of Italy and Taylor Fritz of the United States pose for a photo following Sinner's Men's Singles Final victory on Day Fourteen of the 2024 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 08, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.\" class=\"wp-image-321007\" \/>Photo by Sarah Stier\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>John McEnroe, who won the US Open Men\u2019s Singles title four times, has picked the American player he believes is most likely to challenge <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> and Jannik Sinner moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>John McEnroe picks Ben Shelton as the American who is most likely to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner<\/p>\n<p>Ben Shelton will be hoping to continue his recent good form in the US Open second round on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The American has been in scintillating form as of late, capturing his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open and breaking into the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton forms part of a strong American collective \u2013 including Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe \u2013 hoping to end the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/what-andy-roddick-was-concerned-about-ahead-of-the-2003-us-open-final\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">22-year wait for an American male Grand Slam singles champion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John McEnroe, an eight-time Grand Slam champion who battled the likes of Bjorn Borg during his playing career, has picked Shelton as the most likely player to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the top of the tennis tree.<\/p>\n<p>During ESPN\u2019s US Open coverage on Wednesday, McEnroe said: \u201cMy guy would be Ben Shelton. I think he has got an incredible attitude, the personality, and he has the game to back it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love his story. He played other sports. I have been preaching that at my academy for years. He went to college to mature a little bit. This guy was number five on his team in Freshman year. He won the NCAA\u2019s as a sophomore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is happening slowly but surely. He is a way better player than he was when he joined the tour. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a threat. He has lost to these guys: he lost to Alcaraz at the French and Sinner in Australia. But he realises that there is a gap and a way to go, but he is getting closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had to pick one guy who is American, it would be him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben Shelton faces a former US Open semi-finalist in the second round<\/p>\n<p>Ben Shelton\u2019s second-round opponent at the US Open has prior success at the tournament.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/ben-shelton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shelton<\/a>, who defeated Peru\u2019s Ignacio Buse in round one, will play Pablo Carre\u00f1o Busta in the US Open second round.<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago, the Spaniard reached the semi-final stage and was just one set away from reaching his first Grand Slam final against <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/alexander-zverev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Zverev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2193554239-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"USA's Ben Shelton (L) shakes hands with Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta after their men's singles match on day five of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne on January 16, 2025.\" class=\"wp-image-321016\" \/>Photo by WILLIAM WEST\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Carre\u00f1o Busta was two sets to love up against Zverev, before going on to lose 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 3-6.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton and Carre\u00f1o Busta have faced off once previously on the ATP Tour.
