{"id":99012,"date":"2025-08-28T16:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T16:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/99012\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T16:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T16:15:08","slug":"prosecutors-investigate-molly-cuddihy-death-after-hospital-infection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/99012\/","title":{"rendered":"Prosecutors investigate Molly Cuddihy death after hospital infection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Ms Cuddihy, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/local-news\/greenock-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Greenock<\/a>, developed septic shock while being treated for a rare cancer at the hospital, an experience she described while giving evidence to the Scottish Hospitals Inquiry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is understood that her death this week was reported to prosecutors by a doctor.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/nhs-greater-glasgow-clyde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde<\/a> has expressed its \u201cdeepest condolences\u201d to Ms Cuddihy\u2019s family.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said her death is being investigated.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A COPFS spokesman said: \u201cThe Procurator Fiscal has received a report on the death of a 23-year-old woman in Glasgow on 26 August 2025.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cAn investigation into the death is ongoing and significant developments will be shared with the family throughout the investigation.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: \u201cOur deepest condolences are with the family of Molly Cuddihy during this extremely difficult time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cTo respect patient confidentiality we are unable to provide further comment.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><img   alt=\"The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry is investigating the construction of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus \" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry is investigating the construction of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus (Image: Andrew Milligan\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry is currently investigating the construction of the QEUH campus, which includes the Royal Hospital for Children.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It was launched in the wake of deaths linked to infections, including that of 10-year-old Milly Main.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Read More:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Molly Cuddihy, then aged 19, gave evidence to the inquiry in 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was told she had metastatic Ewing\u2019s sarcoma when she was 15-years-old and told the inquiry she experienced \u201cfrightening\u201d fits that were linked to a hospital acquired infection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was cared for at the Royal Hospital for Children and QEUH in Glasgow between January 2018 and 2020, where she was fitted with a line for treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Not long into her chemotherapy, Ms Cuddihy said her body went into septic shock \u2013 a life-threatening condition that happens when your blood pressure drops to a dangerously low level after an infection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The young patient was soon diagnosed with mycobacterium chelonae, an infection in her line that she later discovered came from the hospital environment \u2013 air or water-borne \u2013 and that had probably caused her temperature spikes and fits.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Cuddihy said she had to take a \u201cvery strong\u201d course of antibiotics she likened to bleach to treat the infection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She told the inquiry: \u201cThe medication had horrible side-effects. I thought chemo was bad, but this was something else.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI got a prolonged QT interval with my heart.
