In recent years, Southern Californians have witnessed some outstanding bakeries open throughout the region. But longtime pastry chef Naomi Shim has been consistently cranking out some of the region’s best baked goods and daytime eats at Doubting Thomas, a sunny cafe on the border of Westlake and Historic Filipinotown. As the morning progresses, Shim’s team refills display cases with danishes, banana bread, coffee cake, and croissants while delivering strong coffee drinks alongside filling breakfast sandwiches and rice bowls. Throughout the years, Doubting Thomas has become a solid neighborhood staple on Temple Street near Rampart Boulevard, likely due to its signature dish that summons the hungry: a pork shoulder breakfast burrito.
The room feels relaxed, easy, and comfortably casual as families and groups dine together throughout the day.
Doubting Thomas is a first-come, first-served joint. Amazingly, the line moves quickly, and the tables magically open up when needed. Weekends see increased wait times.
