Paul Iglesias and Sophia Akbar first unleashed their large-format, festive vision for Oakland dining with the Colombian Parche in 2023. Jaji, which debuted in early 2025, applies the pair’s vivacious approach to family-style dining to Afghan cuisine, with a menu that celebrates tradition in novel, sophisticated ways. One year into business, this model seems to be working out great.
Jaji’s cocktail standouts balance sweetness and spice in novel ways. Order the Pashtunwali #1, with date-infused bourbon and cumin soda, and the Sparks Like Stars, a playful take on the lychee martini, with a lychee-yogurt wash that references the marinated chicken kabobs (a great pairing).
Keep an eye out for the fun Afghan Fried Chicken pop-up the restaurant occasionally hosts, featuring crispy, spicy chicken, caviar, and champagne.
