As a massive San Francisco power outage left about 130,000 customers without electricity ahead of Christmas, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) came under fire on social media for issuing what residents described as unclear and conflicting updates. In its latest advisory on X, PG&E said, “Update: We are working with first responders and city officials on an outage in San Francisco affecting approximately 130,000 customers. We will share more information as it becomes available,” followed by a series of bullet points.

The final bullet point drew the strongest reaction. PG&E added, “Our outage map on pge.com is saying restoration is possible later today, though we are not able to confirm that just yet.”

‘When will power be back in San Francisco?’
The statement invited frustration as residents and businesses searched urgently for answers on San Francisco power outage restoration time, especially during the final weekend before Christmas.

Online searches surged around questions such as “When will power be back in San Francisco?”, “PG&E outage update: when will electricity be restored?” and “SF power outage today — when is power coming back?” as the PG&E outage map became a focal point for anxious customers. Some people on social media pointed out that the uncertainty appeared to come from PG&E itself, despite the information being published on its own SF power outage map.

Social media reactions target PG&E’s outage messaging
Several users called out PG&E directly, questioning how the utility could be unsure about its own restoration estimates during the power outage San Francisco was experiencing.
One user wrote, “You don’t know if your own map is correct? #GISFail”

Another user, YT (@YBT1903), posted, “Restoration is possible later today though you can’t confirm that? Such a meaningful update after what 9 hours since it began? We are looking forward to your next batch of commercials. They have been instrumental in raising our perception of you.”
A separate user, Jefefé (@JDubwub), highlighted what many saw as the core issue by pointing directly to “The last bullet point.”
Outage map at center of criticism
The PG&E outage map has been widely shared as residents try to track the power outage SF in real time. However, social media critics argue that saying restoration is “possible later today” while also stating it cannot be confirmed has been unable to answer the most important question of when San Francisco’s power will be back.
