Christmas isn’t even here, but the Kern County Public Works Department is spreading the word about ways to recycle Christmas trees after the holiday.

You can compost at home if the tree is free of flocking and other contaminants.

You can recycle by placing the tree in your green container if the tree is cut into pieces small enough to fit inside with the tree stand, decorations and nails removed. The container lid must close; whole trees, flocked trees and artificial trees are not accepted, a public works news release said.

Or you can the haul the whole Christmas tree to one of 22 drop-off locations from Dec. 26 through Jan. 9. Be sure to secure your load properly and remove all items from the tree. No flocked or artificial trees are accepted.
