North Allegheny celebrates with the trophy after beating North Catholic during the WPIAL Class 4A girls volleyball championship Nov. 2, 2024 at Peters Township High School.

The WPIAL girls volleyball teams have concluded section and nonsection matches, and invitational tournaments are in the past.

The WPIAL postseason is here, and the playoff pairings committee, on Friday, assembled and released the brackets for all four classifications.

North Allegheny (Class 4A), Oakland Catholic (Class 3A), Hopewell (Class 2A) and Frazier (Class A) drew the No. 1 seeds.

The top four teams and ties that couldn’t be broken in all sections with seven or more teams and the top three and ties in sections with six or fewer teams qualified for the playoffs.

The Tigers have been the No. 1 seed in Class 4A every year since girls volleyball expanded to four classifications in 2016.

The champions from last year and in 2023 seek their 11th title overall and sixth in the past eight years.

North Allegheny (12-2) and No. 2 seed Peters Township (13-3), which tied with Upper St. Clair for the Section 1 title, received byes to the Class 4A quarterfinals set for Oct. 25.

Upper St. Clair (13-3), a Class 4A semifinalist last year, is the third seed, and Seneca Valley (10-6) is seeded fourth. Both will host first-round matchups at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

North Catholic (8-6), the runner-up in Class 3A in 2023 and the Class 4A runner-up to North Allegheny last year, is the No. 6 seed and will face No. 11 Kiski Area in the first round at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Upper St. Clair.

The bracket features 14 teams with two extra teams qualifying because of a three-way tie for second place in Section 2 between Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley and North Catholic, and a tie for third in Section 4 between Armstrong and Fox Chapel.

Oakland Catholic (17-1) hopes to make a run to a first WPIAL title after winning the Section 1-3A championship. The Eagles lost to No. 1 Beaver in last year’s 3A quarterfinals.

Beaver (17-1), last year’s runner-up to Mars, is the No. 2 seed, and the Section 2 champion and No. 3 seed Planets (14-4) seek the program’s third WPIAL title.

Section 3 champion Thomas Jefferson (14-3) is seeded fourth.

With 18 teams, there will be two preliminary matchups Monday to decide the No. 15 and No. 16 seeds. The first-round matches are Tuesday.

Hopewell (15-1), the Section 1-2A champion, hopes to keep it going toward a seventh WPIAL championship and its first since 2011. The Vikings won five WPIAL titles from 2002-07.

The Vikings were denied a WPIAL title in 2024 as Quaker Valley swept them in the finals.

Section 3 champion Waynesburg (18-0) grabbed the No. 2 seed. The Raiders were upset, as the No. 6 seed, by Avonworth in last year’s first round.

Seton LaSalle (18-2) and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-3) are the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively.

All eight first-round games will by Tuesday evening. With 20 teams in the field, eight teams are paired for four preliminary matchups Monday. The winners will advance to the first round to take on the top four seeds.

The Quakers (8-10) have an uphill climb to defend their Class 2A title. As the No. 15 seed, they will take on No. 18 Keystone Oaks (8-10) on Monday with the winner facing Waynesburg in the first round.

Frazier (11-3) returns to the top seed in Class A, and the Section 4 champion hopes to make another run to the WPIAL title match.

The Commodores, a two-time WPIAL champion, most recently in 2022, were denied a WPIAL title last year by Greensburg Central Catholic. The Centurions finished fourth in Section 1 this year and won’t be able to defend their title.

Beth-Center (13-2), the Section 3 champion, is the No. 2 seed, and Section 5 champion Fort Cherry (13-2) is seeded third.

Eden Christian (14-4), the runner-up to Forth Cherry in Section 5, is the No. 4 seed. Eden defeated St. Joseph in last year’s third-place consolation to qualify for the PIAA tournament.

All four WPIAL championship matches will be Nov. 1 at Peters Township High School’s AHN Arena.

Twelve WPIAL teams also will qualify for the PIAA playoffs: two from Class 4A, three from Class 3A, four from Class 2A and three from Class A.

Class 3A and Class A again will have consolation matches to determine their respective third-place qualifier.

North Allegheny and Greensburg Central Catholic won two of the four state titles last year. The Tigers won their eighth consecutive PIAA crown with a 3-1 victory over District 1’s Spring Ford.

The Centurions’ PIAA championship victory, a five-set triumph over District 3 champion Linville Hill, was the third state crown in school history. They also won in 2014 and 2016.
