(KRON) — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a garbage truck in San Jose early Thursday morning. According to the San Jose Police Department, officers responded around 4:05 a.m. to the 2800 block of Bascom Avenue.

Arriving on the scene, officers determined that a blue 2020 Peterbilt garbage truck driven by a man was headed west on Shamrock Drive and turning into the rear alley of a strip mall when it struck someone. The person who was struck was lying in a driveway, covered in blankets at the time.

The pedestrian, an adult male, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the garbage truck, police said, remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The identity of the victim is expected to be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner. The incident marked San Jose’s 29th fatal collision and 29th traffic death in 2025. It was also the city’s 14th pedestrian death this year.
