In unsuspecting fashion, Outer Richmond bakery Breadbelly and I became intertwined. It became the main character of the first article I wrote for Eater, all about its yolky, salty egg coffee. Since that ran in 2020, the James Beard Award-nominated Breadbelly has actually gotten better and better.
Part of what makes Breadbelly better than ever is the opening of the bakery’s small interior. Charming, hung with local painters selling their intimate portraits of San Francisco vistas. The patio will always have a few groups; part-owner Clement Hsu’s white husky may be lounging around in the morning. You can head to the much larger Dogpatch outpost, too, which opened in spring 2025.
To that end, don’t go to Breadbelly expecting a quick exchange of cash for treats. If you’re in a rush, only drop by on a weekday. Otherwise, head to the original oasis on Clement Street and post up, or head to the new spot on the east side and explore the emerging developments on the water.
