(FOX40.COM) — Two men are in critical condition after a plane crashed near an elementary school in North Sacramento on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Sacramento Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at around 12:30 p.m. to Claire Avenue and Rio Linda Boulevard for an aircraft emergency. Both needed extrication to get out of the plane.

Spokesperson with Sacramento FD reported that two men were transported to a trauma center in different ambulances.

At around 2:20 p.m., the passenger on the plane went into cardiac arrest and was revived; however, he remains in critical condition, according to Sacramento FD.

The Sacramento Police Department said officers are providing traffic control to allow crews to investigate.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed on X, its crews are investigating the Piper PA-32 crash in Rio Linda.

At this time, the cause of the plane crash is unknown.
