FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A flood watch is in effect for much of Central California through Friday as rain continues to raise the risk of flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters warn that heavy rain could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low lying or flood prone areas across the valley.

Areas under the flood watch include Fresno, Clovis, Bakersfield, Visalia, Merced, Madera, Hanford, Corcoran, Lemoore, Delano, Wasco, and parts of the San Joaquin Valley, Sierra foothills, and Kern County.

The National Weather Service says creeks and streams are already running high and could overflow their banks if more heavy rain falls. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

People who live in flood prone areas are encouraged to monitor forecasts and stay alert for possible flood warnings. NWS officials say those living near waterways or in low lying areas should be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
