A tractor-trailer overturned in a crash on U.S. 101 near San Jose, closing all southbound lanes of the highway as hazmat crews cleaned up a large spill.

The tractor-trailer crashed into a pickup truck around 5:30 a.m. on the highway south of Hellyer Avenue as the pickup slowed down for flooding in the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying two 4-thousand-gallon tanks, was traveling at an unsafe speed and did not see the slowing pickup, according to CHP.

The tanker truck driver was transported to the hospital for injuries; the pickup truck driver was not injured.

Traffic was being diverted to the Yerba Buena Road off-ramp, CHP said.

Caltrans was coordinating a cleanup effort at the scene of the crash. The agency estimated the highway would be re-opened at 5 p.m. Thursday.
