BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — 2025 in Kern County wasn’t all heavy news. It was filled with many advancements, additions, and surprises.

The much-anticipated Hard Rock Casino Tejon has officially opened its doors, marking a historic moment for Kern County. The casino, featuring its iconic big guitar, welcomed its first guests, drawing both locals and tourists. “Such a proud and historic moment that we’re celebrating here today because this is the first and only recognized tribe in Kern County,” said Senator Melissa Hurtado. “They’re finally being seen. It’s an opportunity not just for the tribe but also the entire region.”

As excitement filled the casino, Kern County also celebrated three large lottery jackpot winners. A Powerball ticket sold in Tehachapi and another at a Bakersfield Albertson’s each won nearly $1 million. Additionally, a Mega Millions winner at a Ramco Express in downtown Bakersfield walked away with $240,000.

In a turn from fortune to fame, Bakersfield food truck owner Gilbert Juarez, known as Mr. Dimples, went viral after a live online feed from his truck caught the attention of the internet and Jennifer Hudson. Juarez was invited to appear on Hudson’s show, where he charmed the audience with his enthusiasm. “Whatever happens, I just want to say look out because here comes Dimples Foods!” he said.

Foo Fighters fans were treated to a surprise last-minute concert at the Niles Theater, with $30 tickets selling out quickly. “I literally jumped off the freeway at Gorman and turned around,” said fan Cat Webb. “Left my best friend at Disneyland and came and got in line.”

Nostalgia was also in the air with the reopening of Woolworth’s, where a couple tied the knot shortly after the ribbon was cut on the iconic burger bar. “Now I was very hungry so I said let’s go somewhere we can eat and we went to this place… sign our marriage certificate,” said the newlyweds.

The 2025 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway raised over $828,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Nearly a thousand viewers entered for a chance to win a new John Balfanz home, with Noe Torres being the lucky winner. “Hi Noe. This is Beatrice from St. Jude dream home and I want to tell you congratulations you won the house tonight,” said Beatrice from St. Jude. Torres was in shock, learning that his support would lead to a new chapter in his life.
