An explosion on Saturday afternoon suspected to have been caused by a gas leak prompted authorities to shut down a major freeway in Los Angeles County and order residents to shelter in place.
The California Highway Patrol said it closed all lanes of I-5 in both directions in the area of Castaic, a community of about 18,000 people north of Santa Clarita. There was no estimated time to reopen the freeway, CHP Acting Sergeant Luis Quintero said in an emailed statement.
