The North Texas Mean Green (11-2) looks to snap a seven-game bowl losing streak when they face the San Diego State Aztecs (9-3) on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl at University Stadium in Albuquerque.

North Texas comes off a 34-21 loss to Tulane in the American Conference championship game on Dec. 5 that snapped a five-game winning streak. Coach Eric Morris has already left for his new job at Oklahoma State, with special teams coach Drew Svoboda coaching the team for the bowl game. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker will play on Saturday after throwing for 4,129 yards, 31 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Running back Caleb Hawkins, who piled up 1,236 yards and 23 scores, may not play after he was injured in the loss to Tulane, while Wyatt Young leads the receivers with 63 catches, 1,209 yards, and 10 TDs. 

San Diego State returns to the scene of a regular-season loss at New Mexico on Nov. 28 that knocked them out of the Mountain West Conference championship game. Defensive coordinator Rob Aurich took the same position at Nebraska, with cornerbacks coach Demetrius Sumler calling the defense on Saturday. Defensive linemen Jared Badie and August Salvati entered the transfer portal, and quarterback Jayden Denegal is unavailable after undergoing shoulder surgery. Junior Bert Emanuel Jr. is expected to start after throwing for 37 yards on 5-of-9 passing in limited action. Lucky Sutton ran for 1,237 yards and 10 touchdowns, with Jordan Napier catching 48 passes for 629 yards and two scores. Ryan Henderson and Trey White each had seven sacks, while Niles King had 6.5 and Chris Johnson made four interceptions.

The Aztecs are 6-1 all-time against the Mean Green, but they haven’t played since San Diego State beat visiting North Texas 30-12 on Sept. 20, 1975. The Mean Green’s last bowl win came in 2013 over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, while the Aztecs are bowling for the first time since 2022.
