Know Your Facts – A South Pasadena Tradition for Over 130 Years
The City of South Pasadena has the longest-running self-built float in the Rose Parade.
The all-volunteer organization, the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses (SPTOR), has been constructing and decorating their own entries since 1893.
Key details about the South Pasadena float:
Oldest Entry: It is the oldest continuous float entry of any kind in the parade, including both commercial and self-built floats.
Volunteer Effort: The float is entirely designed, funded, built, and decorated by volunteers, relying on community fundraising and dedication.
Community Tradition: The annual construction is a significant community event, involving hundreds of resident & family volunteers each year.
One of Few: South Pasadena is one of only six remaining “self-built” entries in the parade, which compete against professionally constructed, large-budget commercial floats. The other self-built associations are from Burbank, Downey, La Cañada Flintridge, Sierra Madre, and the Cal Poly Universities.
