A person was killed and 10 people were sent to hospitals Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle collision on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights, where a big rig crashed into multiple vehicles, authorities said.
The crash on the southbound freeway, just south of Fourth Street, occurred at about 5:10 a.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At least one vehicle caught fire and a “physical rescue” was requested, according to Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A total of 15 people were assessed with 10 patients taken to local hospitals, Middleton added.
Paramedics transported some of the injured — with moderate injuries — to Adventist Health White Memorial hospital, the CHP said.
The CHP reported that nine vehicles sustained major front-end damage. It was unclear if the big rig was loaded.
A Sigalert shutting down all southbound lanes of I-5 at 5:22 a.m. was canceled at 1:13 p.m.
