Southern California is starting the week under sunny skies and gusty Santa Ana winds, but rain is expected to crash the party just in time for New Year’s celebrations.

“We’re going to usher in the new year with a little bit of rainfall coming in,” KTLA meteorologist Kaj Goldberg said during Sunday’s forecast. He noted that Monday and Tuesday will stay dry and mild, thanks to offshore winds that are already picking up speed.

Gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph in foothill and canyon areas, with sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph in many spots.

The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings and advisories through Tuesday for Ventura County, the San Fernando Valley, and parts of the Inland Empire.

Goldberg said the strongest winds will hit Monday evening. Temperatures will climb into the upper 60s and low 70s near the coast early in the week, but cooler air returns Wednesday as the first wave of showers moves in.

By New Year’s Eve, moderate rain is likely across Los Angeles County, continuing into New Year’s Day — which means the Rose Parade in Pasadena could be a wet one.

“Most likely seeing some moderate rainfall… we could see a couple of cells opening up that could be stronger,” Goldberg said.

Showers will linger off and on through Friday and Saturday.
