BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is intensifying its efforts to ensure road safety during the holiday season in Bakersfield.
The CHP’s Holiday Enforcement Period runs from Dec. 31 through Jan. 1 at 11:59 p.m.

“We’re going to have all available resources, all available officers who are able to work out on our roadways,” said Jorge Toro, CHP Bakersfield public information officer.
He emphasized the importance of planning ahead and designating a sober driver, stating, “The key is to plan ahead. Designate your sober driver, have a game plan.”
In partnership with Advance Beverage Company, Bakersfield Designated Driver Inc. (DDI) is offering free designated driver services and taxi rides on New Year’s Eve, from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., to help residents get home safely.
“It’s the only night of the year that we do taxi rides,” said Noah Najera, CEO of DDI. “I’ve added 25 extra drivers to be taxi drivers for that night.”
Last year, DDI helped about 220 people, and this year they aim to assist around 300.
Juan Garza, an attorney and volunteer with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, highlighted the increase in DUI-related fatalities during the holidays.

“We’re not saying don’t celebrate. Go out there, have fun. 2026 is coming,” Garza said. “The message to everyone is, really, don’t drink and drive, ever, especially this holiday season.”
Officer Toro reminded drivers to cooperate if pulled over during the enforcement period.

“Just be respectful, comply,” he said.
Garza also advised sober drivers to remain vigilant, noting, “Very important to be extra cautious because this isn’t just a regular night out.”
