The Original Saugus Cafe, which is said to be the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles County in California, US, is set to close on 4 January 2026.
The restaurant announced its closure after serving its guests for nearly 140 years.
The information was shared via The Original Saugus Cafe’s Facebook page. No explanation for the closure has been provided.
A statement posted on Facebook on 29 December read: “For 139 years, Saugus Cafe has been more than just a restaurant it has been a place where memories were made, stories shared, and generations came together. We are truly honoured to have served the community for so long
“This decision was not made lightly, and it comes with heartfelt appreciation for everyone who walked through our doors, supported our staff, and made this cafe what it was. Thank you, Santa Clarita for all of your support! 1886-2026.”
Established in 1886, the cafe is based at 25861 Railroad Avenue, Santa Clarita.
It was started by James Herbert Tolfree during the period when the Saugus train station was being built.
According to the Los Angeles Daily News report, the update follows other changes among long-established restaurants in the area.
Cole’s French Dip stated in the summer that it would close on 3 August after 117 years, although the planned closure date has been pushed back more than once after increased customer visits.
Separately, The Pantry in downtown Los Angeles – opened in 1924 – closed suddenly in early 2025. After being bought by property entrepreneur Leo Pustilnikov, it was announced in September that the business is expected to reopen at a later date.
“The Original Saugus Cafe in Los Angeles County to shut doors” was originally created and published by Verdict Food Service, a GlobalData owned brand.
