A family-owned jewelry store in Old Sacramento closed its doors for the final time Wednesday after several decades in business.

Skalet Family Jewelers on Front Street held a “going out of business” sale on Wednesday, with discounts including up to 80% off.

John Skalet and his wife opened the shop in Sacramento in 1975, but their story began much earlier. In the 1880s, goldsmith Ben Skalet first arrived in New York City from Russia and built his jewelry business.

The owner says after four generations of making custom jewelry, the time has come for the next chapter.
