BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man, who tried to run away from officers following a traffic stop in northwest Bakersfield, was shot by a Bakersfield Police officer early Monday morning.

The Bakersfield Police Department said on Monday morning, December 29, at around 2:15 a.m., in the area of Mohawk Street at Siena Lane.

Two officers were attempting a vehicle code enforcement traffic stop when the driver stopped at Latina Drive and Pisa Way.

Bakersfield Police said the person inside the vehicle ran off when one of the officers caught up with the suspect.

Police said the suspect pointed a gun at the officer, which led to an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was later taken to an area hospital in “critical but stable condition.”

His identity will be released at a later time.

Bakersfield Police said the officer was equipped with a body-worn camera, which captured the interaction.

The footage will be released when the investigation allows.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
