SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — Reactions are growing across San Diego following dramatic developments involving Venezuela and U.S. military action overseas, prompting demonstrations and sharp debate among residents and local leaders.
Saturday afternoon, protesters gathered at Waterfront Park, voicing opposition to U.S. involvement and condemning what they described as an escalation that could destabilize the region.
“It’s horrible. It’s outrageous that the Trump administration feels it has the right to be the police of the world, especially in Latin America,” said one demonstrator.
Others expressed concern about broader global consequences.
“It’s putting the world in danger,” another protestor said. “I’m afraid of World War III.”
Several demonstrators argued that any military action must go through Congress, citing constitutional limits on presidential authority.
“Congress is the body that has to declare war before we go into war,” one attendee said.
While protests highlighted strong opposition, some local leaders defended the U.S. action as necessary to address national security concerns and support democratic change in Venezuela.
U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said the move has been welcomed by many Venezuelans.
“The people of Venezuela are celebrating because they see an opportunity to return to democracy,” Issa said. “President Trump has eliminated a dictator who has stayed there for so long.”
Others, however, urged caution and raised concerns about international law.
State Sen. Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas, criticized the action, calling it a violation of international norms.
“I was appalled this morning when I woke up to that headline that we have arrested the president of another country,” Blakespear said.
The reactions underscore how global events can quickly resonate at the local level, sparking protests, debate and strong emotions across San Diego County.
While many Venezuelan Americans say they support U.S. involvement and see it as a potential turning point for their homeland, others argue the United States is overstepping and becoming too deeply involved in another foreign conflict.
